Position: Psychiatrist (Mental Health) w/Recruitment/Relocation Incentive-EDRP

Summary

The VA Valley Coastal Bend Health Care System is seeking a Psychiatrist for the Harlingen VA Clinic - Harlingen - TX. The Psychiatrist functions as part of a multidisciplinary mental health team, providing comprehensive psychiatric care to Veterans referred to Mental Health Services. A Recruitment/Relocation Incentive may be authorized to a highly qualified candidate. This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP).

Qualifications

To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements and any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.

Basic

Requirements
  • United States Citizenship:
    Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy
  • Education:

    Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from a VA-approved school
  • License:
    Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the U.S., or D.C.
  • Residency Training:
    Completed residency training approved by VA in an accredited core specialty program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Residency details: (1) ACGME approved; (2) AOA approved; (3) Other residencies with at least five years of U.S. practice deemed appropriate by the Medical Staff Executive Committee.
  • Physician Resident Providers (PRPs):
    Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited programs who would otherwise meet basic requirements; PRPs must be fully licensed, may serve intermittently or fee‑basis, are not independent practitioners, and have a defined scope of practice.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.
  • Preferred Experience:

    ABPN board eligible within 5 years of residency completion; experience treating Veterans with DSM‑5 disorders; telehealth experience; ABPN board certification current or participating in MOC; employment >1 year per position.
  • Physical Requirements:

    Light lifting under 15 pounds, light carrying, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, walking, standing, vision, hearing, mental/emotional and cognitive stability, ability to perform privileges and physical exams.

Duties
  • Administer psychiatric care within the Psychiatrist Section and the Mental Health Service Line.
  • Provide comprehensive psychiatric care to Veterans in an outpatient setting, identifying mental and medical health needs and designing diagnostic and therapeutic plans.
  • Act as medical subject matter expert, coordinate activities of other health service personnel, resolve problems, and educate Veterans and families.
  • Serve in education and research roles and collaborate in team‑based leadership to improve outcomes.
  • Adhere to VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guidelines and quality metrics; devote ~95% of time to patient care.
  • Maintain compliance with VACO, VISN, VATVCBHCS policies, rules, regulations, and Medical Staff Bylaws.
  • Promote customer satisfaction, clinical practice improvement, and system advancement.
  • Participate in committees as assigned; support education, training, and research environments.
  • Work Schedule:

    Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 4:30 pm.
