JOB DESCRIPTIONCommunity Health Worker & Organizer is a full‑time position located in the Rio Grande Valley – serving the Harlingen & Brownsville, TX area. Flexibility in hours is essential to this role to ensure the needs of the community we serve are being met. Saturday and evening work will be required on a regular basis for health fairs, community events and meetings.
ESSENTIALFUNCTIONS
- Health promotion and patient navigation
• Execute health promotion initiatives designed to increase in‑person and telehealth patient volume at RGV health centers.
• Conduct patient navigation activities to help potential clients access care in person at RGV health centers and through telehealth at all Planned Parenthood South Texas health centers.
• Conduct a referral and follow‑up system.
• Provide health education presentations in the community on family planning, women’s health and sexual health topics.
• Assist with regular curriculum review to ensure education content is accurate, up‑to‑date and science‑based, and contribute to project evaluation.
- Organizing and advocacy support
• Collaborate with the Senior Manager for Organizing & Advocacy on the development and execution of grassroots and digital organizing strategies, including rapid response events, Healthy Neighborhood Canvassing, patient advocacy, door‑to‑door canvassing, storytelling, text banking, phone banking, leadership development training and more.
• Deliver presentations and education sessions on public policy, social justice, civic engagement, and legislation to community members, grassroots and grasstops leaders, and elected officials.
• Develop and grow the number of Planned Parenthood volunteers in the RGV, focusing on Brownsville and Harlingen.
• Facilitate the New Volunteer Orientation training for RGV and San Antonio volunteers, ensuring both regions’ volunteers meet all requirements.
• Recruit, educate and support activists, mobilizing them to take action that furthers Planned Parenthood public affairs goals.
• Under general direction, coordinate meetings with government officials, lawmakers, volunteers and staff to build strong local government relationships.
• Work with the Community Engagement Manager for Data & Impact Analysis to input program data timely and track/ analyze volunteer advocacy campaigns using Every Action/Voter Activation Network software.
• Lead RGV volunteers and support at Lobby Day (every two years) – responsible for welcoming attendees, overseeing participation, ensuring travel arrangements, sign‑in sheets, scholarships & trainings are completed, and that all related activities run smoothly.
• Collaborate with Planned Parenthood Texas Votes on permissible activities, adhering to C3/C4 separation policies and procedures.
- Community partnership building
• Develop relationships with organizations that serve Planned Parenthood’s client profile and provide staff and clients with information about services, volunteer and advocacy opportunities, when appropriate.
• Further develop Planned Parenthood’s relationships with coalition partners and establish a presence in area colleges/universities, ensuring students have the resources needed for successful groups.
- Reporting and compliance
• Prepare and provide reports and tracking sheets to the Senior Manager for Organizing & Advocacy, the Regional Health Care Director – RGV, and the Habla Con Tu Hermana SM team.
• Attend meetings, serve on committees, and represent Planned Parenthood as assigned.
• Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
• Comply with Workplace & Customer Service Standards, required for orientation, training and performance.
