Parsons is seeking ambitious and talented Structural Bridge Engineer I candidates to join our growing Pennsylvania bridge practice, supporting projects with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT).

Our Pennsylvania bridge group supports a wide range of PennDOT bridge projects, from conventional replacements to complex and accelerated bridge construction, across all PennDOT districts. Typical structures include steel and prestressed concrete superstructures, multi-span bridges, curved and skewed bridges, and a variety of substructure types. We deliver projects using both traditional design–bid–build and alternative delivery methods, and regularly coordinate with PennDOT, local municipalities, and other stakeholders.

If you want to develop your career working alongside experienced bridge professionals and be part of a dynamic team delivering PennDOT's transportation infrastructure, Parsons is the place for you.

Office locations are Harrisburg (primary), followed by Cranberry Township and Plymouth Meeting, PA.

What You'll Be Doing:

  • Independently develop and supervise others in the creation of bridge designs and plans. Typical deliverables include calculations, drawings, technical reports, and estimates for procurement and construction.
  • Coordinate across disciplines, especially with geotechnical, roadway and drainage designers.
  • Provide input and technical guidance to CAD Designer/Drafters and Engineers working on the same project.
  • Perform structural analysis and design work efficiently and accurately. Provide technical oversight and quality checking of deliverables.
  • Supervise one or more subordinates and provide input regarding performance.
  • Perform structural analysis and design for new and existing bridges and related structures (abutments, piers, retaining walls, culverts, sign and signal structures) in accordance with:
    • PennDOT Design Manual 4 (DM-4)
    • AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications
    • Applicable PennDOT policies, standards, and strike-off letters
  • Assist with load rating analyses and preparation of PennDOT load rating reports, using PennDOT-approved software and procedures.
  • Support quality control/quality assurance (QC/QA) efforts, including self-checks and peer reviews of calculations, plans, and reports to ensure conformance with PennDOT requirements and project standards.

What Qualifications You'll Bring:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering, Master's Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering is desirable
  • 5+ years of experience in bridge structural analysis and design, preferably on PennDOT or state DOT bridge projects.
  • Demonstrated experience with steel, reinforced concrete, and prestressed/precast concrete bridge design, including superstructure and substructure components.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification with the ability and intent to obtain Professional Engineer (PE) licensure in Pennsylvania; progress toward SE licensure is a plus.
  • Familiarity with:
    • AASHTO LRFD Bridge Design Specifications
    • PennDOT Design Manuals (especially DM-4) and PennDOT standard drawings
    • PennDOT's project development and submission processes (e.g., TS&L, FDS, PS&E) is preferred.
  • Proficiency in bridge engineering software (e.g., LEAP, MIDAS, LARSA, CSiBridge, STAAD, or similar) and Bentley Micro Station/Open Roads/Open Bridge tools; experience with PennDOT CAD standards is a plus.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, including the ability to document design assumptions and results clearly for PennDOT reviews.
  • Self-motivated, organized, and open to learning new and innovative design procedures and methods, including evolving PennDOT standards, digital delivery, and model-based design.
