Position Overview
The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections - SCI Mahanoy is actively seeking devoted and passionate Registered Nurses. As a Corrections’ Nurse, you will work with experienced auxiliary staff, receive excellent managerial support, and collaborate with a dedicated team to deliver high‑quality patient care.
Responsibilities- Develop and implement nursing care plans, including vital sign monitoring, restorative therapies, activities of daily living, and patient education.
- Administer oral, intravenous, intramuscular, and subcutaneous medications in compliance with state law and facility policies.
- Assist physicians during physical examinations and in general, chronic care, and specialty clinics, administer treatments, immunizations, tuberculin testing, and screenings.
- Provide emergency responses, including first aid, CPR, and AED, and coordinate care with CRNPs, physician assistants, physicians, or local emergency facilities.
- Document care in the electronic health record, prepare transfer or release reports, complete daily and monthly reports, and maintain controlled substance and narcotics records.
- Receive and provide shift reports to ensure continuity of care and communicate urgent information to the Shift Commander, custody staff, and Certified Health Care Assistant (CHCA) during medical emergencies or operational issues.
- Full‑time employment, 40 hours per week.
- Three 24/7 shifts: 1st (6:00 AM–2:30 PM), 2nd (2:00 PM–10:30 PM), 3rd (10:00 PM–6:30 AM).
- Full retirement benefits available at age 50 or 55.
- No telework option.
- Starting annual salary for newly licensed workers: $89,882.00 (before taxes).

- Active authorization to practice as a Registered Nurse in Pennsylvania.
- Temporary practice permit holders must obtain RN licensure within one year of employment.
- PA residency requirement is currently waived.
- Eligibility for applicants within 60 days of graduating from an approved nursing school; proof of a valid PA temporary practice permit or RN license must be presented upon appointment.
- Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
- Must be able to perform essential job functions.
- Pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
- Pennsylvania law provides employment preference for qualified veterans for appointment to state and local government jobs.
