The Professional Staff Nurse OR is a Registered Nurse and a member of the care delivery team. The Professional Staff Nurse OR is responsible to set the standards for the level and quality of care. The Professional Staff Nurse OR has responsibility, authority and accountability for the provision of nursing care. The Professional Staff Nurse OR manages and provides patient care activities for a group of patients and their families through the application of independent judgment, communication and collaboration with all team members.
The role of the Professional Staff Nurse OR encompasses leadership, partnership, collaboration and supervision. The Professional Staff Nurse OR establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with physicians, other health care providers, patients and their families, to achieve desired patient outcomes throughout the continuum of care. The Professional Staff Nurse OR demonstrates a commitment to the community and to the nursing profession.
Responsibilities:
- Patient advocate.
- Ability to circulate and scrub surgeries.
- Maintain sterile environment.
- Acquire knowledge of surgical equipment and instrumentation.
- Documentation of care provided to patient.
- Performs scrub role (requirement for RNs hired on or after July 1, 2023).

Work Schedule: Shifts worked can be days, evening or night shift depending on the need as well as 8, 10 or 12-hour shifts. We have staff in-house 24/7, however our cases run on a block schedule typically 7a-430p Monday to Friday with urgent or emergent cases in the off hours. New hires are typically hired as 8-hour day shift nurses and then we can adjust hours once orientation is complete and as unit needs dictate.
Staff are scheduled to work weekends, and that rotation is about every 6-7 weekends on averages depending on current unit staffing levels. Staff cover call shifts as well with the typical expectation as one call shift per week, with varied hours again based off unit needs. Staff are expected to work at least one holiday per year and take call for one holiday per year depending on unit staffing needs and current staffing guidelines.
- The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the ages of the patients served by his/her assigned unit as specified below.
- They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient’s status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patients requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.
