Quality Engineer

Proactively improve process and product quality. Work with a “continuous improvement” mindset within the framework of outlined methods in the most efficient manner so that accurate and precise results will be consistently obtained and suggest possible modifications of procedures to improve the quality.

Determine customer requirements from purchase orders, specifications, and other customer documents. Establish critical to quality measures (CTQ), key process characteristics (KPC), key control characteristics (KCC), control plans and failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA). Increase customer satisfaction by reducing claims, remakes, scrap, and deviations from standard work.

Establish framework for gathering and synthesizing data to effectively detect and solve quality issues to prevent recurrence using appropriate quality strategies, tools, and techniques.

Stabilize processes and implement process controls (SPC) to establish and maintain process capability using statistical methods.

Master inspection, measurement and sampling methods and lead efforts for method improvements (MSA).

Maintain the company’s conformance to the standards and internal audit processes. Along with, or as, the lead auditor, maintain policies and procedures related to AS9100, Nadcap, ISO
9001, and other related standards company-wide. Assists in the completion of quality audits for Carpenter companies, customers, and third parties. Review supplier audit findings to communicate their performance and discuss corrective measures, as necessary.

Provide training on quality systems within the organization.

Prepare documents for required management reviews. Maintain a central quality records database and ensures integrity of the data and data accessibility. Maintain customer required documents including production part approval processes (PPAP’s), validated assessment processes (VAP’s), and control plans. Maintain systems and procedures for containment of non-conforming materials and products throughout the company.

Ensure that internal and customer corrective actions as well as customer claims are resolved in a timely fashion. Maintain supplier quality representative (SQR) requirements, as required by certain customers.

Coaches, mentors, and answers technical questions from less experienced quality personnel. Recommends work to be completed to superior. May be expected to lead small sub-teams.

Follow and promote the use of safe working practices. Sets an example for other quality personnel to follow related to safety, policies, and procedures.

Perform all other duties and special projects as assigned.

Requirements for the Quality Engineer:

  • Four year college degree in metallurgical, engineering, chemistry, or technical discipline.
  • Certification as a quality engineer (e.g. CQE) preferred.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of ISO
    9001, IATF
    16949, ISO
    13485, AS9100 and/or Nadcap standards, with preference for the aerospace standards.
  • Expert knowledge of quality systems management, auditing principles, problem-solving or root cause analysis/corrective action processes.
  • Possess working knowledge of statistical process control methods.
  • Familiarity with heat treatment processes and metrology techniques.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office including Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Requires excellent verbal and written communication skills, problem-solving skills, organization skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and make appropriate decisions.
  • Ability to conceptually develop and manage large assignments including responsibility for the appropriate standards and procedures.
  • Ability to coach and mentor less experienced engineers across disciplines as well as direct outside consultants, contractors and material suppliers.
  • Strong problem solving skills to include check sheet, Pareto diagram, cause-and-effect diagram, graphs, control charts, histogram, and scatter diagram.
  • Ability to perform independent work on larger assignments with minimal coaching from supervisor or manager and provide guidance, assistance, and expertise to others in the form of training, coaching, and facilitating the audit process.
  • Experience developing the audit schedule and comply with planned arrangements. Experience which allows the quality engineer to demonstrate auditor requirements - diplomatic, patience, excellent communications, self-disciplined, unbiased, open-minded, honest, inquiring, analytical, resilient, and professional. Ability in preparing quality plans for customer requirements.
  • Willingness to work safely in all production, research, and office environments.
