Senior R&D Scientist II

The Senior R&D Scientist II is a technical lead and subject matter expert in the Combustion Testing Laboratory in Materials Testing, a sub-group of the Testing Analytical & Physics NA (TAP NA) organization. The incumbent is responsible for maintaining the operational functionality of the Combustion lab which services all Business Entities within the North American region. The position fulfills the role of representing Covestro LLC externally in the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) fire testing committees, Underwriters Laboratories (UL) laboratory collaborative standards development committee, and International Isocyanate Institute (III) Fire Science Panel.

The Senior R&D Scientist will leverage expertise in fire science and combustion testing to contribute to the goal of driving business and growth of Covestro products.

Major Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a technical leader and functional leader in Combustion testing
  • Perform a wide range of combustion testing on samples from all seven Covestro business entities
  • Develop methods and provide technical consulting on issues related to fire testing to Covestro internal and external customers new methods may develop into standards and on occasion be adopted by governing bodies (e.g. ASTM) as standard industry practice
  • Manage interactions with Underwriters Laboratory for Covestro North America
  • Serve as member of UL Collaborative Standards Development System (CSDS) which reviews and comments on proposed changes to UL94 (Tests for Flammability of Plastic Materials for Parts in Devices and Appliances) i.e. Flammability issues that may affect Covestro global interests
  • Represent Covestro on the International Isocyanates Institutes Fire Science Coordinating Group (FSCG) responsible for reporting and presenting to the team any proposed changes to codes and standards in North America that could have a detrimental effect on the isocyanate business
  • Assist with FSCG’s efforts to edit or develop global standards related to fire safety
  • Communicate pertinent Fire Science and Combustion testing trends and updates regularly to relevant business entity stakeholders

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical or science related field with a minimum of 4 years’ experience or Master’s degree with a minimum of 2 years’ experience or PhD with 1+ years’ experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Industrial experience preferred

Skills and Knowledge:

  • High Level Knowledge of Combustion testing
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and knowledge of theory of, and expertise for, assigned areas of expertise.
  • Technical creativity directed toward successful development and consulting on non-standard flammability tests.
  • Good communication skills, customer service skills, strong interpersonal skills, and a strong sense of ownership and follow-through.
  • General computer skills commensurate with the technical requirements.
