Summary
The primary purpose of this position is to perform a variety of preservation trade work needed to build, maintain, restore, and/or preserve historic structures and landscapes. This includes historic buildings, monuments, memorials, statues, markers, signs, tablets, artillery pieces, and related sites.
Responsibilities- Assist journey-level Preservationists with routine trade duties to support restoration and preservation projects.
- Work under the direct supervision of a journey-level Preservationist.
- Adhere to the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties.
- Apply basic knowledge of historic preservation trades while working under direct supervision.
Incumbents will sit, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, crawl, and walk over uneven terrain. Protective clothing, gloves, face shields, and respirators may be required. Work may involve lifting objects up to or exceeding 50 lbs. Work is performed on ladders, scaffolds, and elevated platforms.
Working ConditionsWork occurs both indoors and outdoors. Outdoor work is subject to extreme weather conditions, with temperatures ranging from below 0 to over 100 degrees. Elevations may range from sea level up to 10,000 feet. Conditions may expose the incumbent to dust, noise, vibration, cuts, abrasions, hazardous materials, microbiological organisms, and potentially hazardous wildlife. Protective equipment and safety regulations must be followed.
Requirements- U.S. citizenship required.
- Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication.
- Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males.
- Uniform required; a uniform allowance will be provided.
- Minimum age requirement: 18 years, or 16 years with a high‑school diploma or equivalent, or a completed formal vocational training program, or a statement from school authorities agreeing that employment is preferred over continuing education.
- Ability to perform the work of the position without more than normal supervision.
- Ability to interpret instructions and specifications, including blueprint reading.
- Ability to use and maintain tools and equipment.
- Knowledge of equipment assembly, installation, repair, and materials.
- Knowledge of technical practices, precise measurements, and artistic considerations.
Applicants must demonstrate experience in maintaining and preserving historic properties, operating under direction to assist with the stabilization, restoration, and maintenance of historic structures. Required skills include plastering, roofing, painting, carpentry, sandblasting, and relevant vehicle operation. Experience with surface preparation, rough and finish carpentry, cleaning, cement mixing, and concrete repair is essential. Proficiency with hand and power tools such as hammers, saws, wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, drills, tape measures, squares, chisels, draw knives, calipers, and traditional carpentry tools is required.

Volunteer work through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other community, student, or social organizations is valued and will be credited if relevant to the position.
