Electrical Diagnostic Technician​/Electrician - Car Equipment Division

About the Role

The Electrician (Car Equipment Division) reports directly to the Car Equipment Division Supervisor or Foreman and performs skilled electrical work troubleshooting, repairing, maintaining, diagnosing, and testing a wide variety of electrical and electronic equipment on PATH railcars.

Employees are required to work weekends, holidays, and atypical hours (evening and midnight shifts) and may be scheduled for mandatory overtime. Work is conducted in Iowa and outside areas during active train service, in inclement weather, and in an industrial environment, requiring strict adherence to FRA and OSHA regulations and PATH’s drug‑and‑alcohol‑free policy.

• Diagnose, test, repair, and rewire electrical and electronic equipment of railcar subsystems such as traction control, HVAC, lighting, communications, auxiliary power supply, electronic signage, and other subsystems.
• Perform fault log downloads using computerized Portable Test Equipment (PTE) to troubleshoot and repair railcar failures.
• Remove, install, assemble, and disassemble railcar systems and perform repair and overhaul of equipment in the Electrical Shop.
• Use electrical and electronic test equipment to identify defects, clean assemblies/subassemblies, including PCBs, enclosures, motors, and related components.
• Employ hand and power tools, both electrical and pneumatic, to carry out the above duties.
• Execute work in accordance with PATH’s service and maintenance procedures and applicable regulatory standards.

• High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
• Four (4) years of paid full‑time experience as a journeyman in the electrical trade or completion of a registered Car Equipment Electrician Apprentice Program.
• Ability to read electrical prints and use test instruments, precision meters, and related tools.
• Proficiency in troubleshooting electrical problems, motor control diagnostics, and building wiring.

• Knowledge and experience with hand tools and power tools.
• Ability to work rotating shifts (am, pm, midnight, weekends, and holidays).
