Description

Do you want to make a difference in the community by utilizing your construction and inspection skills to enhance the quality of life for citizens and protect the public interest? If so, the City of Harrisonburg's Public Works' Construction Program Inspector position may be right for you!

The Construction Program Inspector role is full-time position with benefits and a preferred hiring range of $26.15 - $28.76 per hour (equivalent to $54,392 - $59,820 annually); however, an exact salary will be dependent upon the selected candidate's qualifications/experience and in compliance with City policy. Applicants may be considered for another level within the department at a hiring rate commensurate with applicant qualifications.

As the Construction Program Inspector, you'll monitor and inspect contractor and private developer construction activities, including erosion and sediment control and stormwater management measures, to ensure quality and compliance with contracts, construction plans, specifications, regulations, standards, and codes. Additionally, you'll maintain detailed inspection and progress records, permits, plans, and other related documentation. As a vital team member, you'll coordinate construction activities between the City and contractors, analyze issues in the field, and make decisions to help meet deadlines and resolve daily challenges, including deviations or errors related to regulations, materials, and other construction matters within your scope of authority.

As needed and as determined by the Public Works Director, you may provide emergency response support for snow and ice operations.

Minimum Qualifications

* Associate's/Technical degree with coursework in engineering technology or related field and minimal experience in engineering or construction work including some construction coordination or project management experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be used to meet this requirement.

Requirements After Hire Date (On-The-Job Training Provided):

* Commercial Driver's License Class B with air brakes within 6 months of hire date.

* Possession of current VDOT Intermediate Work Zone Safety Certification required within six months of hire date or as class scheduling permits.

* Certifications in concrete (ACI), erosion and sediment control (DEQ), and stormwater management (DEQ) required within two years of hire date.

* Completion of VDOT classes for asphalt pavement, soils and aggregate compaction, and pavement markings required within two years of hire date.

The selected candidate for this position will be subject to the following screenings and must receive satisfactory results:

* Alcohol and drug testing as required by the Department of Transportation's Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA);

* FMCSA Clearinghouse Query;

* DMV record review;

* Job-specific physical;

* Criminal background check.
