Position: Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher

Reports to: Principal, Middle School

Contract: 210 Days* (includes 10 days for FACS lab maintenance, weekend and summer work)

Salary Scale: Teacher Salary Scale

FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Summary

This position develops and implements a rigorous family and consumer sciences program and provides related educational services for students.

Qualifications
  • Possesses or qualifies for a Virginia Collegiate Professional license with specific endorsement in Family and Consumer Sciences.
  • Exceptional knowledge and skill in the assigned instructional area and enthusiasm for teaching.
  • Knowledge of instructional strategies and scientifically based research implementation.
  • Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Experience with diverse learning needs and alternative learning models preferred.
  • Familiarity with racial equity and inclusion frameworks.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presenting to diverse audiences.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to flex communication style across cultures.
  • Uses feedback and self‑reflection to grow teaching responsibilities.
  • Proficiency with office equipment and technology (Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, email).
  • Proficiency in public speaking and written communication.
  • Proficiency in business English: spelling, grammar, and spoken language.
  • Emotionally mature, objective, and sensitive; handles responsibility independently and collaborates with students, families, and staff.
Essential Functions
  • Knowledge of at least one family and consumer sciences‑related discipline to facilitate project‑based classes.
  • Build a classroom culture based on project‑based, hands‑on, experiential learning.
  • Support students in after‑school activities such as FCCLA.
  • Develop relationships with local businesses for student career exploration.
  • Prepare students for college and career by developing skills and competencies per state‑approved list.
  • Design engaging, competency‑based lessons that inspire inquiry and project work.
  • Provide a safe and positive learning environment.
  • Perform administrative duties including inventory management, record keeping, grading, and team participation.
  • Comply with school and district policies.
  • Take precautions to protect students, staff, equipment, and facilities.
  • Maintain state licensure and participate in professional development.
  • Follow safety procedures and maintain equipment.
  • Respond to telephone, email, and in‑person inquiries professionally.
  • Serve as a role model and maintain professional boundaries.
  • Demonstrate good attendance, punctuality, appearance, demeanor, and behavior.
  • Participate actively in required meetings.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Model professional, moral, and ethical standards with non‑discriminatory practices.
  • Abide by School Board policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the Principal.
Physical Demands / Work Environment

Light work, lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally, or 10 pounds frequently. Regular travel within the school and interaction with students, staff, and community members. Vocal, hearing, and visual acuity required.

Evaluation

Performance will be evaluated per school board policy and administrative regulations for licensed personnel.

Salary: $54,789 to $76,716 per year
