Position Summary

The primary function of a Professional School Counselor is to provide a comprehensive school counseling program that enhances the learning process, supports social and emotional growth, and promotes career/college development, fostering contributing citizens of our community.

Using leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, counselors promote student success, deliver proactive services, and respond to identified needs by implementing a program that addresses academic, career, and personal/social development for all students.

School counselors are professional educators with a mental health perspective who understand and respond to today's diverse student population.

Qualifications
  • Possesses or qualifies for a Virginia Collegiate Professional license with specific endorsement in the assigned area.
  • Possesses outstanding knowledge and skill in the assigned instructional area and demonstrates enthusiasm for teaching.
  • Effectively demonstrates ability to perform essential functions.
  • Experience working directly with individuals and families from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Familiarity with equity and inclusion frameworks; models non‑discriminatory practices; respects worth, dignity, and individual differences.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; can present to diverse audiences and foster professional relationships.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in the use of a variety of office/instructional equipment and technology, including Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and email.
  • Demonstrated leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for effective collaboration with students, teachers, administrators, and the community.
Education and Experience

Master's degree from an approved program in school counseling or a master's degree from an accredited college/university and completion of an approved school guidance and counseling program.

Must possess or be eligible for the Virginia Department of Education endorsement in School Counseling.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, manage, and communicate a comprehensive school counseling program aligned with school goals.
  • Maintain current resources and use data to tailor programs to student needs.
  • Allocate 80% of time to direct services (counseling/curriculum, individual student planning, preventive and responsive services) and 20% to program management, system support, and accountability per the ASCA National Model.
  • Implement developmentally appropriate group activities and orientation/transition programs across elementary, middle, and high schools.
  • Lead and collaborate with educators in integrating the Virginia Standards for School Counseling Programs.
  • Develop research‑based interventions for emotional and social development.
  • Provide post‑secondary planning information and lead workshops such as FAFSA Night, ECMC College Night, Virginia College Application Week, and other relevant events.
  • Facilitate circle discussions and other collaborative student‑staff forums.
  • Collaborate with parents/guardians and educators for individual student planning, academic, career, and life guidance.
  • Advocate for social and emotional well‑being, monitor progress, and adjust goals.
  • Offer individual and group counseling and crisis intervention as needed.
  • Work with SPED and ESL teams to support students requiring additional services.
  • Conduct assessments for abuse and self‑harm/suicide risk; report to Child Protective Services.
  • Cooperate with community agencies and medical professionals for follow‑up services.
  • Conduct home visits when necessary and mediate conflicts.
  • Serve on the Interdisciplinary Truancy Team in High School.
  • Assist in scheduling development and in providing Morning Meetings.
  • Collect, analyze, and share data on program effectiveness; monitor student academic performance, behavior, and attendance.
