Duties and Responsibilities
  • Supporting students, staff, and teachers in a school and/or childcare setting
  • Implementing developmentally appropriate activities and lessons
  • Assisting with classroom preparation, management, and maintenance
  • Collaboratively developing lesson plans and curriculum

In addition to responsibilities through your designated community organization, you will be responsible for:

  • Regularly managing timesheets (time is captured through an online platform – Time Clock Plus – and submitted twice a month)
  • Consistently participating in on-campus, in-person workshops:
    • Fall Semester 2026 weekly workshops for NEW MCS students:
      Fridays from 11:30 AM–12:30 PM OR 12:45–1:45 PM
    • Spring Semester 2027 bi‑weekly workshops for all MCS students: (Tentatively Tuesdays 4–5 PM, Wednesdays 4:15–5:15 PM, Fridays 11:30 AM–12:30 PM, and 2–3 PM, but they will be finalized by the end of the Fall semester)
  • Attending one semesterly one‑on‑one meeting with your CEVC MCS advisor, to be scheduled midway through each semester
  • Participating in one semesterly MCS Community Day (typically mid‑semester on Fridays midday for approximately 2.5 hours)
  • Engaging in two semesterly campus or community educational programs (list of options to choose from provided on Canvas)
  • Committing to work consistently scheduled 6 or more hours per week for the full academic year (excluding academic breaks)
Qualifications
  • Be a current JMU student (must be enrolled in at least 6 credits)
  • Eligible for Federal Work Study via the ’26 – ’27 financial aid package
  • Must be a current full‑time JMU student
  • Must be eligible for Federal Work Study to participate as a Madison Community Scholar (MCS)
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 or higher
Conditions of Employment

Students must be degree‑seeking students, enrolled on at least a half‑time basis (6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).
