OverviewWe are seeking a Career Educator to work 8–10 hours per week as a Work-Based Learning Experience. The role focuses on program planning, facilitating workshops, and providing individual student support through resumes, cover letters, and career fair preparation.
Duties and Responsibilities- Meet individually with students and alumni to provide guidance and feedback on résumé and cover letter development, Handshake and Linked In profiles, and career fair preparation.
- Present and facilitate career‑related workshops through the Health 100 program to large groups.
- Provide constructive feedback and coaching on professional documents.
- Practice active listening in one‑on‑one and group interactions to ensure students feel heard and supported.
- Maintain accurate records of student interactions.
- Assist with large‑scale Career Center events such as career fairs, networking nights, and employer panels.
- Interest in helping JMU students with career and job search through both appointments and outreach presentations.
- Ability to interact effectively with individuals one‑on‑one and in group settings.
- Willingness to work in a team and build rapport with other Career Educators and Staff.
- Professional communication skills when working with supervisors, coworkers, and students.
- Eager to learn; prior knowledge of career or major‑related topics not required.
- Provide constructive, audience‑appropriate feedback on resumes, cover letters, and career online profiles.
- Design and deliver engaging presentations and workshops on career topics to peer groups.
- Assess student needs, goals, and circumstances to provide appropriate recommendations.
- Demonstrate professional work habits by arriving on time, fulfilling assigned responsibilities, and showing initiative.
- Collaborate effectively with peers and staff to support Career Center services, programs, and events.
- Use Microsoft Teams, Handshake, and other digital tools to support students’ career development.
- Reflect on personal strengths and areas for growth, setting goals to enhance professional development.
Students must be degree‑seeking students, enrolled on at least a half‑time basis (6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).
