Job DescriptionPosition: Long Term Substitute Teacher
Reports to: Principal
Primary Function: Provide quality instruction that enables each child to pursue his/her education as smoothly and completely as possible in the absence of the regular teacher.
Additional RequirementComplete the Child Abuse and Neglect:
Recognizing, Reporting and Responding for Educators online module. Attach the certificate to the application.
- Valid Virginia teaching license (not required for custodial substitutes).
- Recent (within twelve months) certificate from a licensed physician stating no communicable tuberculosis.
- Background check clearance from State Police and Virginia Department of Social Services/Child Protective Services.
- Emotionally mature, objective, and sensitive to people and their concerns.
- Able to handle responsibility, work independently, and maintain good working relationships with students, families, and co‑workers.
- Report to the building administrator or school secretary upon arrival.
- Review all lesson plans and schedules before students arrive.
- Maintain the established routines and procedures of the designated school and classroom.
- Teach the lesson outlined and described by the absent teacher.
- Consult with administration, team leader, or grade‑level teacher to understand the schedule and assignment.
- Maintain a positive classroom climate and demonstrate enthusiasm for teaching/learning.
- Practice and promote positive interaction among students.
- Comply with and support school division policies, regulations, and procedures.
- Complete the Substitute Assessment Form and leave it for the regular teacher.
Long‑term teacher substitute rate after 10 consecutive days is $200/day.
Physical Demands / Work EnvironmentLight work, lifting up to 25 pounds occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds frequently. Regular travel within the school and interaction with students, staff, and community members. Vocal communication required; hearing and visual acuity necessary for instruction and monitoring. Contact with staff members is required. Not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
EvaluationPerformance will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on the evaluation of licensed personnel.
