Role Overview

The Madison Community Scholars (MCS) program pairs qualified JMU students with local off-campus community organizations for one-year, part-time engagement. This position focuses on Education & Childcare Support, working 6–8 hours per week to assist in school or childcare settings while gaining real-world experience.

Key Responsibilities
  • Support students, staff, and teachers in a school or childcare setting
  • Implement developmentally appropriate activities and lessons
  • Assist with classroom preparation, management, and maintenance
  • Collaboratively develop lesson plans and curriculum

Additional duties include:

  • Managing timesheets via the Time Clock Plus online platform, submitting twice per month
  • Participating in on-campus workshops:
    • Fall Semester 2026: weekly workshops for new MCS students (Fridays 11:30-12:30 AM or 12:45-1:45 AM)
    • Spring Semester 2027: bi-weekly workshops (tentatively Tuesdays 4-5 PM, Wednesdays 4:15-5:15 PM, Fridays 11:30-12:30 AM, 2-3 PM)
  • Attending a semesterly one-on-one meeting with the CEVC MCS advisor (mid-semester)
  • Participating in a semesterly MCS Community Day (mid-semester Friday midday for approx. 2.5 hours)
  • Engaging in two semesterly campus or community educational programs (options listed on Canvas)
  • Committing to at least 6 hours per week for the full academic year (excluding breaks)
Qualifications
  • Current JMU student enrolled in at least 6 credits
  • Eligible for Federal Work Study through the ’26 – ’27 financial aid package
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Interest in working with children and educational settings
Conditions of Employment

Students must be degree-seeking and enrolled at least on a half-time basis (6 credits for undergraduates, 5 credits for graduates). After acceptance, new hires must complete an I‑9 form and an E-Verify check to confirm eligibility to work in the United States.
