The GIS & Data Support Technician supports the Department of Community Development by collecting, managing, analyzing, and maintaining datasets related to housing, structures, and broader community development activities. This position assists with the professional maintenance, continuity, and ongoing development of the County’s Geographic Information System (GIS), including data analysis, computer-aided cartographic mapping, Next Generation 911 (NG911) addressing, and integration with permitting software and other related systems.
Serving as a key support role within the department, the technician helps ensure that accurate and accessible data is available to inform departmental operations and long-term planning efforts. The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of GIS and a strong interest in collecting, organizing, and analyzing data to support strategic community development and planning initiatives across the County.
- Collects, maintains, and updates geographic and non-geographic datasets related to housing, structures, schools, parcels, infrastructure, and community development activities
- Assists with maintenance and enhancement of the County’s Geographic Information System (GIS), including spatial data editing and geodatabase management
- Produces maps, graphics, and visualizations for reports, presentations, planning efforts, and public information
- Pulls addresses and prepares adjoining landowner letter for mailing
- Maintains Next Generation 911 (NG911) addressing through accurate address assignment, verification, and maintenance
- Maintains data connections between GIS and departmental systems, including the Evolve permitting software
- Performs basic spatial and data analysis to support planning, zoning, housing, and development initiatives
- Ensures data accuracy through routine quality control and validation
- Assists with field data collection and verification using GPS or mobile GIS tools when needed
- Responds to requests for GIS maps, data, and related information
- Research land use project and best practices as needed
- Supports departmental GIS projects and performs other related duties as assigned
- Comprehensive knowledge of theories, principles, practices, and equipment associated with Geographic Information Systems
- Competency with Microsoft Office software
- Operating knowledge of a global positioning system
- Working knowledge and skill in operating tabular and graphic display and output devices associated with GIS and supporting database and spreadsheet programs
- Working knowledge of ESRI products
- Good interpersonal skills
- Use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems
- Identify complex problems and review related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions
- Determine how a system should work and how changes in conditions, operations, and the environment will affect outcomes
- Comprehend technical specifications for manual and computer-aided/automated cartographic products
- Perform clean and accurate work
- Strong technical writing proficiency
- Establish and maintain working relationships with colleagues, government officials, the general public, and members of the professional community
- Use the County’s automated permit tracking system
- Regular work attendance is required
