Physical requirements: This is sedentary work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
Certification: VCIN certification within 90 days of hire;
Valid Driver’s License.
Job Summary
:
The Court Services Officer will assist in the day-to-day operations of the Rockingham-Harrisonburg Court Services Unit. This position provides supervision and case management to local defendants/offenders referred through the Courts. Supervision of all cases are supervised in accordance with Evidence Based Practices and in compliance with standards set by the Department of Criminal Justice Services.
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all the following essential duties:
- Meet with offenders/defendants placed on supervision
- Attend court proceedings on your assigned day(s) and testify as needed
- Administer cited drug and alcohol testing
- Must be able to multi-task in a fast paced, high-volume environment
- Must be able to work as part of a team within the Pretrial Division and the entire Community Corrections Department
- Strong communication skills to interact with representatives from the legal community such as Commonwealth Attorneys, defense attorneys, and local Law Enforcement to discuss cases
- Submit court reports regarding court ordered compliance and file Show Cause and Capias requests
- Maintain a caseload of placements and coordinate appropriate services and referrals
- Conduct risk assessments for probation (M-ost and OST) and pretrial services (Praxis)
- Maintain offender files and utilize the computer database management system (PTCC) provided by the Department of Criminal Justice Services
- Maintain a professional working relationship with Judges, Clerks, Commonwealth Attorneys, and Law Enforcement regarding offenders/defendants’ supervision
- Conduct criminal history record inquiries through VCIN/NCIC
- Meet with and interview criminal defendants, some of whom have a history of violent behavior
- Provide input to Director on a systems approach for services
- Perform related tasks as required

- Code of Virginia and DCJS minimum standards
- VA Court Records
- Public speaking, oral and written communication
- Microsoft Office experience required
- Successfully complete a criminal background investigation
- Ability to obtain and maintain all Department of Criminal Justice Services mandated training
- Manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, organize and prioritize work
- Regular work attendance is required
