The Police Records Specialist is a full-time position with benefits and a preferred hiring range of 20.05 - 22.06 per hour (equivalent to 41,704 - 45,884 annually); however, an exact salary will be dependent upon the selected candidate's qualifications/experience and in compliance with City policy. The ideal candidate for this position will perform a variety of legal and technical work, including processing, coding, reporting, filing, and researching police records involving a computerized filing system.
- Enter a variety of police-related data into a computer system, including complaints, arrests, offenses, and traffic reports;
- Compile, update, file, and retrieve reports and records;
- Expunge and purge records according to court orders;
- Review records for accuracy and completeness;
- Process requests for reports and documents;
- Act as a receptionist while providing consistent and exceptional customer service to police personnel and citizens in a cost‑effective, efficient, and courteous manner;
- Perform notary duties;
- Provide appropriate information to police agencies, insurance carriers, attorneys, and the public, including VSP, FBI, courts, and other law enforcement agencies;
- Operate the Virginia State Police's Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) teletype system;
- Take civil (not criminal) fingerprints as needed;
- Assess, contact, and follow up with the Commonwealth's Attorney for extradition on all arrests;
- Receive, review, and process all warrants for arrest and related documents;
- Ensure Emergency Custody (ECOs) and Temporary Custody Orders (TDOs) are served and processed according to the legal guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school with two years of administrative or similar experience.
- Valid driver's license.
- This position is classified as essential and requires availability to work 12‑hour shifts from 7:00 am – 7:00 pm, including nights, weekends, holidays, and during inclement weather. Schedules are created on a 2‑week basis and employees work Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday in that 2 week period. The schedule then repeats itself for the next 2 week period.
- Current possession of or ability to obtain Level A VCIN certification within six (6) months of employment.
- Current possession of or ability to obtain a Notary Public license within an acceptable timeframe as determined by the department.

The selected candidate for this position will be subject to the following screenings and must receive satisfactory results:
- Criminal Background Investigation, including VCIN Database Query and Fingerprinting*;
- DMV Driving Record Review.
* Due to the sensitive nature of information available through the performance of this position's essential functions, the successful applicant selected for the role will be subject to a criminal background investigation and fingerprinting by the Harrisonburg Police Department. At a later date, more information will be provided to the candidate selected for those steps in this process.
