General InformationThe University Health Center provides a comprehensive array of health care services and health education programs to JMU students. Included in our health care services are several medical clinics, a pharmacy, a medical laboratory, and other programs that provide services for more than 30,000 patient encounters a year. UHC practices evidence-based medicine in a confidential, inclusive environment.
This position is being recruited to support patient care within the Health Center and may be filled as either a Physician or a Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant (NP/PA), depending on the selected candidate’s licensure, credentials, and experience. While all providers serve in a primary care capacity for the student population, compensation and responsibilities may vary by role in accordance with scope of practice and organizational needs.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
Physician The selected Physician will function as a primary care provider for acute care illness and injury of college age students and provide collaboration/consultative services for physician assistants and nurse practitioners employed by the Health Center. Upon request of the Medical Director, the Physician will lead clinical projects, perform chart reviews for education and quality assurance and lead or serve as a member of committees within the University Health Center or on which the University Health Center is represented.
The Physician may occasionally be called upon to perform duties normally assigned to the Medical Director or Assistant Medical Director at their discretion.
Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant The selected Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant will function as a primary care provider for acute care illness and injury of college age students primarily in the appointment clinic with occasional rotation in the urgent care clinic, at a comfortable pace with adequate time for health care and education.
QualificationsPhysician
Required:
- DO or MD
- Residency graduate in Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, or Emergency Medicine
- Board Certified or Board Eligible in one of the disciplines above
- Unrestricted DEA registration
- License to practice Medicine and Surgery in the Commonwealth of Virginia
- Ability to work well with college-age students in a friendly, student-focused and, at times, fast-paced environment
- Ability to provide education to students during appointments and occasionally as a guest speaker in health science classes or other outreach venues on campus
- Excellent communication skills with clients, colleagues, and other JMU faculty and staff
- Knowledge of or ability to quickly learn an electronic health record system (EHR); UHC is a paper‑free health care facility
- Ability to use multiple software programs, primarily Microsoft Office (including Outlook), and the internet

Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant
Required:
- Advanced practice nursing degree and Registered Nurse degree from an accredited nursing school or department, or a master’s degree in Physician Assistant Studies (or equivalent)
- Current Virginia provider license and prescriptive authority (NP/PA)
- Primary care clinical experience; experience with college-age populations preferred
- Ability to work well with college-age students in a friendly, student-focused and, at times, fast-paced environment
