Cost Accountant

Overview

A growing real estate development and property management company is seeking a detail-oriented Cost Accountant to support both the development and property management sides of the business. This in-person role is based in Hartford, CT and works closely with leadership on construction accounting, project cost tracking, accounts payable, and financial reporting across a diverse multifamily portfolio spanning five states. This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment and enjoys working at the intersection of real estate development, construction, and property management accounting.

• Support accounts payable operations including invoice processing, coding, approvals, and vendor payments
• Maintain vendor compliance records, insurance documentation, and onboarding processes
• Track and reconcile project costs for active construction and development projects
• Monitor hard costs, soft costs, retainage balances, and contingency usage against approved budgets
• Process subcontractor requisitions and owner pay applications using appropriate cost codes
• Prepare and review monthly construction draw packages and supporting documentation for lender submissions
• Assist with project budgeting, forecasting, and budget-to-actual variance reporting
• Maintain loan draw schedules and coordinate funding requests with lenders and title companies
• Prepare journal entries related to construction‑in‑progress (CIP), capitalization, and project closeouts
• Reconcile operating accounts, escrow accounts, and security deposit accounts
• Support month‑end, quarterly, and year‑end close processes
• Assist with audit preparation, tax support, and special accounting projects
• Collaborate with project managers, vendors, ownership groups, and internal accounting teams

This role plays a critical part in maintaining financial accuracy and supporting the successful execution of development and property management operations. Your attention to detail, analytical mindset, and ability to manage project costs directly impact budgeting accuracy, operational efficiency, and long‑term portfolio performance.

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
• 3–5 years of accounting experience in real estate development, construction, or property management preferred
• Experience with job cost accounting, construction draws, and CIP reconciliation strongly preferred
• Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting systems
• Familiarity with Yardi Voyager, Sage Intacct, or similar accounting software preferred
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
• Strong communication and problem‑solving skills

• Salary $85,000 – $100,000+ per year
