A Connecticut State agency is seeking an experienced Accountant to provide hands-on accounting and financial support within its business office. This is an excellent opportunity for an accounting professional who understands GAAP, financial controls, reconciliations, reporting, and fiscal operations and can step in quickly to support the department’s CFO.
The successful candidate will take ownership of key daily accounting and fiscal responsibilities, allowing the CFO to focus on broader departmental priorities.
Key Responsibilities- Perform daily accounting and financial activities in accordance with GAAP and established fiscal policies
- Manage purchasing card (P-Card) activities, including transaction review, documentation, and compliance
- Complete monthly and bank reconciliations and investigate discrepancies
- Review financial transactions for accuracy, completeness, and compliance
- Maintain financial records, documentation, and fiscal controls
- Support internal controls and procurement compliance
- Prepare and maintain financial statements, reports, schedules, and related documentation
- Assist with budget management, monitoring, and reporting
- Support fiscal planning and analysis as needed
- Ensure accurate and timely completion of accounting and financial records
- Provide day-to-day business office and management support
- Assist the CFO and department leadership with accounting and financial needs
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred
- Strong professional accounting experience; government or public-sector accounting experience is a plus
- Strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)
- Experience with account reconciliations, financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls
- Knowledge of procurement processes and fiscal compliance
- Strong attention to detail and ability to independently manage multiple accounting responsibilities
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to quickly learn department procedures, systems, and financial processes
$33.70 per hour
