Job Description
The anesthesiologist will be responsible for providing clinical anesthesia care for a variety of pediatric surgery cases for children of all ages, including many infants and increasingly neonates.
Position SummaryThe Pediatric Anesthesiologist will work with a multidisciplinary team to provide high quality care, including evaluation and a treatment plan specific to each patient's needs.
Responsibilities- Provide routine and emergent anesthesia care for neonatal through adult patients, with ASA classifications I–VI.
- Perform routine preoperative evaluations and provide contemporary regional and general anesthesia care for specialties including pediatric surgery, cardiothoracic, pediatric dentistry, otolaryngology, neurosurgery, urology, ophthalmology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthopedics and sports, plastic surgery & craniofacial surgery.
- Administer diagnostic and therapeutic nerve blocks for acute and chronic pain.
- Oversee recovery room activities and administer appropriate drug and respiratory therapy.
- Implement mechanical ventilator use in the recovery room and, as necessary, in intensive care units.
- Provide consultation regarding preoperative preparation, intraoperative and postoperative anesthetic management, and chronic pain treatment.
- Perform administrative duties, including completion of required reports, records, and quality assurance reviews.
- Participate in anesthesia service training activities, including in‑services.
- Participate in managing catastrophic problems such as drug overdoses, cardiac arrests, respiratory problems, or trauma admissions.
- Engage in continuing medical education and maintain high quality assurance.
- Approve the use of general, sedative, regional, or local anesthetics.
- Oversee anesthesia administered by nurse anesthetists.
- Administer anesthesia to patients with particular anesthetic difficulty.
- Inform patients of anesthesia risks.
- Participate in evaluating the quality and appropriateness of patient care and resolving identified problems.
- Engage in academic, scholarly work and division citizenship per division chief.
- Comply with medical and hospital procedure policy.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
No direct reports, but oversees residents, fellows, CRNAs, etc.
QualificationsMinimum Education and Experience Required
- MD or DO degree.
- Fellowship in Pediatric Anesthesiology.
- Licensed and registered, in good standing under the laws of the State of Connecticut.
- Board‑eligible or Board‑certified in Pediatric Anesthesiology.
- PALS.
