Position Overview
The HJRC Summer Enrichment Program Teacher will work at the Hartford Juvenile Residential Center for a 6-week program aimed to help young people ages 12-17 to improve their educational, social & emotional skills. The teacher will work under the direction of the Site Director to lead classroom instruction, delivering an age-appropriate, gender- and trauma-sensitive curriculum with an intensive focus on remediation in math, reading and writing.
Training and a curriculum will be provided before the program begins.
- Provide instruction in math, reading and writing following prescribed curriculum
- Develop weekly lesson plans
- Instruct students individually or in small groups
- Use trauma-informed methodologies to help manage student behavior issues in the classroom
- Follow the security and safety protocols of the Hartford Juvenile Detention Center
- Determine opportunities for Intern to support and lead classroom instruction
- Work with the program director to evaluate the effectiveness of the curriculum and make adjustments as necessary

Salary$53.00 PER HOUR
Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in Math, English, or related field
- State of Connecticut teaching certification in Grades 6-12, in appropriate content area where applicable
- Experience in school or after-school instruction
- Interest in working with young people who may struggle academically and/or emotionally
- Willingness to build relationships with young people
- Flexibility and adaptability, able to shift styles to fit the needs of a wide range of cultures, people and organizations
- Master’s or advanced degree
- Fluent in Spanish or Creole
- Familiarity with the Sanctuary model of trauma-informed care and Cornell University’s Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI)
- Work will be performed inside of the Hartford Juvenile Detention Center, with occasional meetings taking place at the Domus office in Stamford, CT.
- This is a temporary, 6-week, 6-hour/day, non-exempt position, which is not eligible for benefits. Teachers are expected to be present for all days of instruction.
- Teachers will earn $40/hour for all hours of instruction, training and required meetings.
