Summer School Counselor
The summer school counselor supports high school students enrolled in the New Haven Public Schools summer school program, with a primary focus on ensuring that seniors meet district credit and graduation requirements for diploma completion. The counselor works collaboratively with building leaders, teachers, families, and the district summer school coordinator to monitor student progress, support academic completion, and provide guidance regarding graduation eligibility.
The individual in this position reports directly to the building leaders and/or the District Summer School Coordinator. Primary responsibilities include but may not be limited to:
- Monitor and review student transcripts, credit accumulation, and graduation status for all summer school enrolled seniors.
- Ensure students are enrolled in the appropriate recovery and/or required coursework aligned with district and state graduation requirements.
- Identify seniors at risk of not meeting graduation requirements and develop individualized completion plans.
- Verify completion of coursework and communicate updated credit status to school administrators and district personnel.
- Meet regularly with students to provide academic counseling, postsecondary planning support, and graduation guidance.
- Communicate with families regarding student progress, attendance concerns, credit deficiencies, and graduation expectations.
- Participate in summer school staff meetings and collaborate with school leadership to support overall program operations.
- Maintain confidentiality of student records and comply with FERPA and district policies.
- Perform additional duties related to student support and summer school operations as assigned by building leadership or district coordinator.
Preferred skills:
- Familiarity with New Haven Public Schools graduation and credit recovery procedures.
- Experience supporting at-risk students and diverse student populations.
- Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced summer program environment.
Qualifications:
- Masters Degree in Social Work, Connecticut Certification in Social Work (071)
Compensation:
Certified Teacher $35.00 / hour
