Job Overview
Teacher – Universal Pre Kindergarten – Bilingual in English and Spanish (Roxbury, MA). Full‑time, day shift.
SummaryAt Horizons for Homeless Children, we provide full‑time early education to children experiencing homelessness. A Teacher supervises children, implements a daily curriculum, and follows Horizons’ policies and procedures.
Responsibilities- Display knowledge of early childhood development.
- Contribute to the design and implementation of a dynamic, creative, age‑appropriate, and multi‑cultural curriculum.
- Practice positive behavior management techniques in guiding children’s behavior.
- Inform parents of classroom curriculum plans (e.g., posting lesson plans).
- Maintain an accurate and up to date PQ registry.
- Complete required 20 hours of professional development annually.
- Communicate positively with children, parents, and the classroom team.
- Assist in the design and implementation of parent communication systems.
- Prepare and submit children’s progress reports and participate in parent conferences.
- Assist in planning and attending Parent‑Teacher functions.
- Communicate openly and effectively with the classroom team, including participating in weekly team meetings.
- Work closely with Family Advocates to promote healthy family relationships.
- Maintain appropriate health and safety standards per state regulations.
- Implement emergency procedures.
- Organize classroom schedules for child‑initiated and teacher‑directed activities.
- Coordinate transitions for children to and from classrooms.
- Ensure classroom equipment is in good repair and report low supplies.
- Submit attendance sheets, accident reports, progress reports, and time sheets accurately and promptly.
- Bilingual in English and Spanish (required).
- Clear and effective communication skills, written and verbal.
- Ability to collaborate and solve problems using a team approach.
- Supervision skills focused on strengths, mutual respect, consistent feedback, professional growth, and inclusion.
- Ability and willingness to handle sensitive information confidentially.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Prior experience with homeless children, multi‑ethnic urban families, or children at risk is a priority.
- Basic computer skills and knowledge of MS Office and relevant ECE software.
- Commitment to Horizons mission and core values (Collaborative, Inclusive, Innovative, Passionate).
- Department of Early Education and Care (EEC) Teacher Certification (required).
- At least 9 months to 1 year of relevant work experience.
- 12 ECE Credits (minimum preferred for EHS and HS classrooms).
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education or related field (strongly preferred).
- Starting salary range: $54,200–$57,599 (based on competencies, experience, and skill set).
- Health coverage options with Horizons covering 70–75% of premiums.
- Choice between HMO and PPO plans; individual coverage cost per biweekly paycheck around $117.77.

- Full‑time, 40‑hour work week, onsite Monday‑Friday.
