Most of our classrooms are located within community environments in Hartford, Avon, Plainville, Bristol, Portland, Hebron and Haddam Killingworth, allowing for best integration opportunities. Many of our classrooms are located in public school settings and provide students a unique integration experience. This model promotes the inclusion of Oak Hill students in the life of their school and their home communities. Some residential students live in supervised community group homes.

Our classrooms are heterogeneous, providing our students with exposure to a diverse population of students where they can learn from each other. Our programs are divided into Primary/Elementary classrooms and Secondary/Transition classrooms.

About the position:

The Special Education Teacher in Training at Oak Hill assists in developing, implementing, monitoring and supervising students' educational programming. This individual develops functional academic, vocational, social and students ADL skills coupled with managing all aspects of the classroom including supervision as a means of enhancing student independence and quality of life in keeping with Oak Hill mission. Position is available due to program expansion

  • Bachelor’s degree in Special Educationor closely related field, working towards a Special Education Master's degree and Special Education certification.

    Experience:

    Some teaching experience and/or closely related field experience.
Responsibilities:
  • Assists in developing, implementing and monitoring instructional programs for all goals and objectives for each student's IEP as well as other aspects of students' programs.
  • Becomes familiar with information about students to ensure that programs which are developed and implemented meet students' needs to provide consistency in program implementation.
  • Helps to develop IEPs for each student byassistingthe Director and Curriculum Specialists in formal and informal assessments of students' needs, including ecological inventory and vocational assessments.
  • Assistsin directing activities and training of all classroom team members and addresses issues of concernregardingstaff to promote students' educational programming, communication, understanding, and continued provision of highest level of services.
  • Attends andparticipatesin trans-disciplinary and progress report meetings tofacilitatethe exchange of information and evaluation of students todeterminethe need for modification of programs;maintains and updates student notebooks.
  • Assistsin setting up and organizing the classroom environment tofacilitatestudents' educational programs.
