Position HighlightsThe Radiation Division sets standards for the safe possession, use, storage, transportation, and disposal of radioactive materials and radiation generating equipment. The Division inspects facilities that use radioactive materials, x-rays machines and other radiation producing equipment and is responsible for responding to reports of accidents and incidents involving radioactive materials.
This role is responsible for independently performing licensing, inspections, incident response, and environmental studies where radioactive material and other sources of ionizing radiation are used to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations as well as developing and implementing enforcement actions resulting from violations at facilities that utilize ionizing radiation.

The Radiation Division ensures the safe and secure possession, use, transportation, and disposal of radioactive material and radiation producing machinery and responds to incidents involving radioactive material and fixed nuclear facilities. The Radioactive Materials unit is responsible for the Agreement State program, field operations and emergency response.
The Agreement State Program is responsible for licensing and inspection of facilities using radioactive material. The unit ensures materials are operated in compliance with Connecticut regulations and the National Materials Program to ensure radiation exposures to the general public and employees are maintained are safe levels and adverse impacts to the environment are minimized.
Purpose of Job Class (NATURE OF WORK)In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in inspection surveys and complex field studies pertaining to the control of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and radiological wastes and responding to incidents and accidents involving sources of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation.
Examples of Duties- Performs detailed environmental studies at places of employment to determine whether workers are exposed to injurious amounts of ionizing and non-ionizing radiation;
- Recommends corrective measures where necessary;
- Schedules and plans periodic repeat inspections to ensure compliance;
- Performs related laboratory work;
- Consults with and advises users, possessors, and manufacturers of ionizing radiation-producing equipment and ionizing radiation-emitting materials on cooperative monitoring and control programs;
- Consults and cooperates with other state, interstate, and federal agencies on matters pertaining to radiation control;
- Keeps informed on the latest technological developments in radiation control and related fields;
- Collects and disseminates information relating to the recognition, evaluation, and control of occupational health hazards presented by manufacturers and users;
- Prepares reports as required;
- Investigates complaints concerning occupational exposure to ionizing and non-ionizing radiation;
- Conducts complex investigations, surveys, and studies pertaining to control of radiological wastes;
- Performs detailed radiation monitoring tests of air, water, and other materials to establish background data for the appraisal of effects produced by new radiation facilities;
- Maintains and calibrates radiation detection equipment to assure proper working order;
- Organizes programs of sampling and surveillance of the discharges of establishments using radioactive materials;
- Devises and maintains response plans for action in case of a radiological transportation accident;
- Inspects sources and effects of non-ionizing radiation emitting devices and installations;
- May speak before lay and professional groups;
- Performs related duties as required.
