Job Description

Are you seeking career growth within the State of Connecticut? The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is hiring an Environmental Trainee to work within the Stormwater Permitting & Enforcement Program in Hartford.

Clean water is vital to Connecticut's future. From our rivers to the Long Island Sound, the Stormwater Permitting & Enforcement Program is at the forefront of environmental protection. This hybrid full-time position (35 hours per week, Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–4:30 PM) is based at DEEP Headquarters, 79 Elm St., Hartford, CT 06106.

Position Highlights
  • Manage Permit Authorizations:
    Review applications and process critical stormwater discharge permits, ensuring compliance with environmental standards.
  • Ensure Compliance through Fieldwork:
    Conduct on-site inspections and analyze field data to verify permit compliance.
  • Develop Professional Communications:
    Prepare clear technical reports and correspondence translating environmental data for varied audiences.
  • Drive Compliance Assistance & Resolution:
    Identify inspection issues and work with management and facilities to enforce compliance and close out cases.
  • Assist with Regulatory Actions:
    Research and provide recommendations for administrative enforcement.
  • Analyze Technical Plans:
    Evaluate engineering plans, process flow diagrams, and maps to ensure alignment with environmental requirements.
  • Engage the Public & Stakeholders:
    Research and develop presentations for public hearings and meetings with stakeholders, state and federal officials.
  • Represent the Agency:
    Act as a liaison, providing technical assistance to municipal, federal, and state partners.
  • Support Team Objectives:
    Adapt to new challenges, support statutory responsibilities, and pursue continuous improvement. May perform other tasks as needed.
  • Use of a state vehicle and travel may be required; a valid driver’s license is mandatory.

Salary Note

During the first year of training, Environmental Trainees with a Bachelor's degree earn $48,410 per year, and those with a Master's degree earn $50,127 per year.
