Position: CAPITOL INFORMATION AND TOURS PART-TIME TOUR GUIDE/OFFICE STAFF
Overview
The mission of Capitol Information and Tours (CIT) is to educate citizens about state government through tours of the Legislative Office Building (LOB) and State Capitol, publication distribution, and the staffing of two information desks. CIT is a program of the League of Women Voters of Connecticut (LWVCT).
The Tour Guide/Office Staff will conduct tours of the Legislative Office Building and Capitol; staff the CIT Office in the State Capitol or LOB; provide administrative support to the program director; schedule tour groups; provide information to callers and visitors; process sales receipts; and serve as an Emergency Warden. Training will be provided to ensure that staff is well prepared to lead tours, answer questions from the public, and serve as an Emergency Warden.

Hours are 9 AM - 3 PM, M-F when the Capitol is open.
General Duties
Conducts tours of the LOB and Capitol.Provides information to callers and visitors with questions about government; events in the Capitol, LOB, and other state buildings; the LWV; tourist attractions in Hartford and throughout the state; and historical data on the Capitol.Greets tour groups - directing them to available space for the start of the tour, reviewing tour guidelines, and introducing the tour guide(s).Processes souvenir sales - receiving orders and money, filling orders, issuing receipts, maintaining an inventory spreadsheet, and processing checks for bank deposit.Monitoring guide performance, and developing guide enrichment and appreciation programs.Performs office tasks such as: reviews and edits publications; responds to requests for information on Connecticut, the Capitol, and state government; monitors inventory of tourism brochures; maintains research files; photocopies; processes mailings; completes other projects as assigned by the Director.Serves as an Emergency Warden – directing the evacuation of volunteer guides and tour groups during fire/bomb emergencies or their sheltering/seeking cover during emergencies.Qualifications
1. Some college preferred, or equivalent work experience.
2. Interest in history, political science, or communications; the goals of the League of Women Voters of Connecticut; legislative operations and state government; design, construction, and history of the Capitol;
Connecticut history; and/or Hartford tourism.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities the Employee Shall Exhibit
Ability to make effective presentations to individuals and groups of all ages, abilities, and education levels.Ability to maintain highly favorable public relations and work cooperatively, objectively, and impartially with members of all political parties.Excellent interpersonal skills, good telephone manner, and clean and professional appearance.Proficiency with Zoom and Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, and MS Excel. Familiarity with Canva or Publisher is a plus.Knowledge of current events, Hartford, and statewide attractions.Special Requirements
Must be able to: climb multiple flights of stairs, speak clearly and loudly, be able to answer phones and use computer systems, visually monitor visitors entering the building, and remain calm during emergency situations.Must be willing to work overtime as required.Must maintain a professional, nonpartisan, friendly attitude during regular direct contact with the public, legislators, legislative staff, volunteers, CIT, and League of Women Voters CT staff and Board members.Must be willing to learn and lead staff emergency procedures.#J-18808-Ljbffr
