DescriptionVacancy is in the Office of Sustainability. Under supervision, the incumbent supports a variety of activities related to the implementation of the City’s sustainability initiatives. The role collaborates with residents, nonprofits, government agencies, and foundations, promoting a culture of sustainability and identifying methods to advance the City’s sustainability performance.
The position may initiate, manage, and coordinate sustainability‑related projects that support the Climate Action Plan and the Sustainable CT certification across different City departments. This includes monitoring performance metrics, providing support for procurement-related matters (e.g., RFPs, contracts), facilitating meetings, advising city officials on sustainability issues, managing fundraising and grant writing activities, monitoring changes in local, state, and federal law, identifying funding sources, and communicating with stakeholders through various media.
Outreach and attendance at city and community meetings are also part of the role.
Additional duties may be required. The position is unclassified and grant‑funded; the City is not required to fund the position if the grant funding expires.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Knowledge of group facilitation techniques, customer service practices, residential energy concepts, and sustainability practices and initiatives.
- Skill in verbal and written communication, grant writing and administration, and data collection and analytics.
- Ability to work quickly under pressure, effectively represent the department and the City in meetings, use computer systems and relevant software, establish positive working relationships, express oneself clearly, analyze sustainability matters, and prepare clear written materials.
Work is performed primarily in an office setting with some travel to various sites. The incumbent may be required to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college with major coursework in Business Administration, Political Science, Public Administration, Urban Planning, Environmental Studies, Engineering, Project Management, Landscape Architecture, or a related field
* and* three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience in project management or sustainability initiatives. - Associate’s degree from an accredited college with major coursework in the same fields
* and* five (5) years of progressively responsible professional experience. - Valid driver’s license.
- Preferred:
Spanish language skills.
Applicants selected will be required to pass a physical examination administered by the City physician, a drug and alcohol screening, and a background check. Service is subject to federal, state, and municipal laws, rules, and regulations. A probationary period of 3–12 months may apply.
