Job Description

The Clinical Informatics Pharmacist manages pharmacy informatics systems to support safe, efficient, and high-quality medication use across the organization. This role is responsible for the design, build, implementation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of pharmacy automation and technology. Additionally, they will be involved in any system that collects, stores, or uses patient health information related to medication management and serves as the pharmacy’s subject matter expert for informatics platforms.

• Clinical Informatics Support – 40%: Support end users by configuring systems, designing workflows, troubleshooting issues, and optimizing complex informatics tools.
• Interpret clinical alerts, system builds, and other informatics data to design safe and effective medication workflows.
• Provide on-call support for system issues and periodically staff Central Pharmacy as needed.
• Collaborate with organizational stakeholders to create opportunities for pharmacy staff to expand responsibilities beyond dispensary roles.

• Departmental Operations & Quality Improvement – 30%: Support pharmacy program infrastructure, including medication preparation and delivery, automated dispensing cabinets, remote IV checking, kit preparation, and electronic health record systems.
• Apply lean processes and continuous improvement principles to optimize workflows and enhance patient safety.
• Develop and maintain systems and standard work to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations for medication dispensing and controlled substances.
• Train staff on operational use of technology and systems, providing guidance to pharmacists, technicians, and other clinical staff.
• Collaborate with EPIC and Willow teams to develop, test, and optimize pharmacy-related system builds, and maintain software libraries for infusion pumps through coordination with clinical stakeholders.

• Department Leadership – 15%: Establish and communicate a clear vision for pharmacy staff focused on patient safety, regulatory compliance, and alignment with organizational goals.
• Serve as the liaison between pharmacy staff and informatics teams (EPIC, Willow, IS, or equivalent) to optimize technology and communication systems that improve patient outcomes.
• Collaborate with leadership to implement short- and long-term operational and infrastructural goals supporting the expansion of pharmacy services, both clinical and operational.
• Monitor staff training, productivity, and development, identifying opportunities to enhance practices and optimize efficiency and safety through informatics systems.

• Policy, Compliance & Performance Metrics – 15%: Collaborate in the development and review of departmental policies and procedures governing pharmacy operations and infrastructure.
• Develop performance metrics for pharmacy systems, analyze data to identify workflow improvements, and provide staff development opportunities to ensure competence and continual performance improvement.
• Support the achievement of departmental goals through informatics-driven efficiency, accuracy, and safety initiatives.

Education and/or Experience

Required:

• Education:
  
  Bachelor’s degree in Pharmacy or Pharm
  
  D.
• Experience:
  
  2–5 years in a hospital pharmacy.

Education and/or Experience Preferred:

• Completion of a hospital residency.
• 1 year of experience in pharmacy informatics.
• Experience in pediatric pharmacy.
• Knowledge of state and federal regulations, including Joint Commission requirements, relevant to pharmacy services, documentation, and patient rights.

License and/or Certification

Required:

• Active State of CT Pharmacist’s license.

License and/or Certification Preferred:

• ASHP Pharmacy Informatics Certificate or related health informatics certificate.
• Lean Six Sigma (LSS).

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge:

• Microsoft Windows operating system and expert proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
