Position: Data Engineer I (Snowflake)

Overview

Travellers Data Engineering team constructs pipelines that contextualize and provide easy access to data for the entire enterprise. As a Data Engineer, you will play a key role in growing and transforming our analytics landscape, designing, building, and deploying data solutions that support AI, ML, and business intelligence.

Responsibilities
  • Build and operationalize complex data solutions, correct problems, apply transformations, and recommend data cleansing and quality solutions.
  • Design data solutions and analyze sources to determine value.
  • Incorporate data management competencies including governance, security, and quality.
  • Collaborate within and across teams to support delivery and educate end users on data products and analytic environment.
  • Perform data and system analysis, resolving defects and incidents of moderate complexity.
  • Test data movement, transformation code, and data components.
  • Database Admin & Governance:
    Snowflake DBA responsibilities—warehouses, RBAC, resource monitors, tuning; design and enforce role‑based access control and least‑privilege security.
  • Lead data governance: classification, tagging, lineage tracking.
  • Collaborate with security and compliance on platform posture; audit access logs and respond to security requests.
  • Platform Support & Administration: LOB admin across Snowflake, Databricks, and AWS services; configuration, environment setup, access management; troubleshoot CI/CD and HSP pipeline failures; monitor and optimize platform performance and cost.
  • Development & Engineering: build and maintain dbt models, Python pipelines, and Terraform IaC; write advanced SQL; contribute to reusable frameworks and internal tooling.
  • Advisory, mentorship & leadership: onboard new projects, guide teams on best practices, mentor staff and vendor resources, lead work streams and set technical direction.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in STEM related field or equivalent.
  • Six years of related experience and 4–7+ years in data engineering or analytics engineering.
  • Proven Snowflake DBA or platform administration background.
  • Experience with data governance, security, and access control frameworks.
  • Vendor/contract resource collaboration and technical oversight.
  • Mentorship or informal technical leadership experience.
  • Advanced SQL skills;
    Snowflake DBA‑level (strongly preferred).
  • Experience with Data Governance tools (Alation, Data Hub, Unity Catalog, or Snowflake‑native).
  • Terraform IaC for cloud resource provisioning.
  • CI/CD pipeline knowledge and troubleshooting.
  • Active use of AI‑assisted development tools (Git Hub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude, etc.).
  • Python pipeline scripting, automation, data transformation, and API integrations.
  • Databricks workspace and cluster management, notebook‑based development, Delta Lake.
  • Experience building and maintaining dbt projects.
  • AWS basics: S3, IAM, Lambda, and Terraform; AWS Cloud Practitioner certification or equivalent experience.
  • Strong verbal and written communication; ability to interact with team members and business partners.
  • Leadership and self‑motivation; ability to identify growth opportunities and mentor teams.
  • Problem‑solving skills, debugging, and repetitive problem resolution.
  • Steady, predictable pace in delivering work; ability to decompose assignments into small releases.
  • Knowledge of immediate systems and domain expertise.
Must Have
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, related STEM field, or equivalent education and/or work experience.
  • 2 additional years of software/data engineering experience.
