Senior Systems Engineer

Overview

At Conning, a Senior Systems Engineer is essentially a senior‑level IT infrastructure and cloud engineering specialist. The role focuses heavily on Microsoft enterprise technologies, automation, hybrid cloud infrastructure, reliability, and security. Based on recent job postings, the position is centered around designing and operating large‑scale Microsoft environments for a financial services company.

• Schedule:
  
  9 am – 5 pm | on‑call during some weekends
• Designing and managing hybrid infrastructure across on‑prem systems and Microsoft Azure
• Running Microsoft 365 services like Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint, and One Drive
• Managing identity and access systems using Azure Active Directory (Entra )
• Automating infrastructure and operational tasks using Power Shell, ARM, and Bicep templates
• Implementing Infrastructure‑as‑Code (IaC) practices for VMware and Hyper‑V environments
• Building disaster recovery and business continuity systems using Azure Site Recovery
• Monitoring system health, performance, security, and compliance
• Troubleshooting complex outages and acting as the highest escalation point for infrastructure issues
• Supporting endpoint/device management with Intune and Autopilot
• Collaborating with security, architecture, and Dev Ops teams on modernization initiatives
• Mentoring junior engineers and serving as a Microsoft subject matter expert

It’s more strategic and architecture‑oriented than a traditional sysadmin role. Senior engineers are generally expected to own systems end‑to‑end, lead projects independently, and improve reliability and automation across the environment.

• Strong focus on enterprise server/infrastructure engineering within Microsoft environments
• Solid expertise with enterprise hypervisors, with a strong preference for VMware
• Power Shell scripting/automation
• Partner closely with the security team to support vulnerability remediation, infrastructure hardening, and security engineering initiatives
• Demonstrated ability to lead infrastructure modernization projects end‑to‑end
• Strong Windows Server and hybrid cloud engineering experience with Azure exposure (Azure Arc/Automation/Monitor nice to have)
• Experience in insurance/financial services/regulated environments (preferred)
