Stroke Program – Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner (APRN)
Hartford Hospital - Role Scope

As part of our Neuro Stroke Program, the Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner (APRN) provides high-quality, holistic, and cost-effective advanced practice care to patients and families across the healthcare continuum. This role is integral to the medical management of patients with complex neurologic and cerebrovascular conditions.

Key Responsibilities Include
  • Delivering comprehensive advanced practice care to achieve or maintain optimal health outcomes, manage disease, and reduce risk of illness.
  • Exercising independent clinical judgment in the care of individuals, families, and populations across the lifespan.
  • Collaborating within a multidisciplinary neuroscience team caring for patients with stroke and other blood-supply-related disorders of the brain and spinal cord, including:
  • Brain aneurysms
  • Carotid artery disease
  • Cervical artery dissection
  • Vascular malformations
  • Other complex neurologic conditions
  • Practicing under the direction of attending physicians at Hartford Hospital.
  • Reporting through a matrix structure that may include a Nurse Manager, Nursing Director, and/or Medical Director.

Qualifications
  • Completion of an ARC-PA accredited program or completion of an approved Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP-BC) and/or Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-BC) program
  • Certification through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA)
  • Current PA or APRN license (required for licensure after 1994)
  • Board certification in accordance with Connecticut state law
  • Prior specialty experience in neurology or stroke care may be required
