Position Responsibilities
- Conduct detailed inspections of boilers and pressure vessels to ensure compliance with state regulations and safety standards.
- Identify potential risks and flaws in boiler systems and provide actionable recommendations to address these issues.
- Maintain accurate and detailed records of inspections, findings, and any corrective actions taken.
- Collaborate with other state departments and collaborators to ensure seamless communication and effective resolution of any boiler-related concerns.
- Provide expert advice and mentorship on boiler maintenance and safety practices to facility managers and other relevant personnel.
- Participate in training and professional development opportunities to stay up‑to‑date with industry standards.
- Performs internal and external inspections of boilers.
- Witnesses hydrostatic tests on boilers.
- Examines piping systems, boiler accessories, and repairs/replacements of steam boilers.
- Identifies presence of cracked, burned, or bagged tubes.
- Consults with boiler repairers and approves type of repairs to be made.
- Writes reports and recommends abatements.
- Testifies at hearings and in court.
- May collect overdue fees for boiler operating certificates.
- Performs related duties as required.
- Knowledge of methods and procedures used in manufacture and operation of riveted and welded steam boilers.
- Knowledge of relevant state laws, statutes, regulations, and American Society of Mechanical Engineers codes.
- Knowledge of inspection methods and techniques.
- Interpersonal skills.
- Oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to compute allowable pressure and strength requirements using standard formulas.
- Ability to read technical drawings, designs, and specifications.
- Ability to utilize computer software.
Five (5) years of experience in the construction, installation, repair, and maintenance of steam boilers.
Qualified SubstitutionsCollege training in mechanical engineering or a closely related field may be substituted for the general experience as follows: fifteen (15) semester hours are equivalent to one-half (½) year of experience, up to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience with cast, welded, or riveted pressure vessels or boilers.
- Experience in pressure vessel repair or in‑service inspection.
- Experience installing or repairing boilers and hot water heaters.
- Experience performing boiler inspections on behalf of an insurance company.
- Experience with the Jurisdiction Online inspection software or other boiler inspection software.
- Experience using Microsoft Office Suite applications or software including Outlook and Word.
- Must possess at the time of appointment and maintain during employment a National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors or a current Connecticut license in one of the following categories: S‑1, S‑2, S‑3, or S‑4.
- May be required to travel.
- May be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
