POSITION:
Electrician - Buildings and Grounds Department

REPORTS TO:

Director of Facilities, Maintenance Manager and/or Mechanical Supervisor/Designee

PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Electricians general responsibilities are to troubleshoot repair, replace or renovate any and all electrical systems throughout all the buildings assigned to the Hartford Public Schools.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Troubleshoot, repair, replace or renovate all electrical systems including fire-alarms systems, clocks- bell and PA systems and their associated programming, control wiring, electric heating, all facets of lighting repair and replacement.
  • Install, maintain, and trouble shoot motors, controllers, switch gear, and emergency generators.
  • Perform any other related work assigned by Director of Facilities and/or designees.
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
  • Must possess State of Connecticut trade license E-2. E-1 preferred.
  • Must have five (5) years’ experience as a commercial /industrial electrical journeyman.
  • Must have experience in trouble-shooting electrical systems in an educational facility.
  • Must have to have a valid driver’s license and willingness to use own vehicle as well as transporting trade tools and limited materials within reason.
  • Must be willing to respond to emergency work that might emerge outside of normal work schedule.
  • Proficient knowledge of electrical materials, tools and techniques of electrical trade.
  • Knowledge of national, State and local electrical code and any other state, local or Federal regulations for electrical work.
  • Ability to read and work from blueprints.
  • Ability to understand drawings and specifications for small electrical projects.
  • Skilled in use of hand and power tools, testing devices applied in the electrical trade.
  • Must be able to work within difficult time constraints and under stressful conditions.
  • Must work and appear in an orderly and professional manner.
  • Must provide all necessary hand-tools as required to perform all electrical repairs and installations.
  • Knowledge of fire alarm panels, bell/clock systems, PA systems, stage lighting control systems a plus.
  • Must possess knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety protection of the trade together with the specific requirements imposed upon workers in the performance of work by the Occupational Safety and Health Act.
  • Must possess the ability to work at heights at or greater than 30 feet and in assignments that requires bending for long periods of time.
  • Must have the ability to lift 50 lbs.
  • Must be capable of working both independently and as a team member.

CERTIFICATION / LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:
Non-certified position

EVALUATION:
Every 30 working days until the end of the initial probationary period of 120 working days. Evaluated annually.

SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Twelve-month work year; forty-hour work week.

Monday through Friday 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM. May be required to work second shift hours of 3:00 pm to 11:00 pm.

Salary schedule 84 of Local 566 ($64,952-$70,152), American Federation of State, Municipal and County Employees, AFS-CME

UNION AFFILIATION:
The Board recognized Local 566 American Federation of State, Municipal and County Employees, AFSCME as the exclusive bargaining unit for this position.
