Family Relations Counselor Trainee

The State of Connecticut Judicial Branch is seeking a Family Relations Counselor Trainee to receive on the job training and is given progressively responsible assignments in the following areas: in marital dissolution or separation cases, conduct comprehensive family evaluation involving disputed issues of child custody, visitation, and family finances; prepare and present oral and written evaluations, including dispositional recommendations to the court, attorneys, and families;
when necessary, provide testimony to the court; conduct conjoint mediation sessions with parties to assist them in achieving mutually agreeable solutions to disputed issues; work with attorneys and clients, receive training in conducting pre-trial settlement conferences and analyzing complex family financial data and recommending equitable distribution of income and assets; develop, maintain, and utilize relationships with community agencies to make appropriate referrals for services and to obtain necessary information;
provide crisis-intervention, ongoing counseling and education services to clients; may assist in providing public education workshops and training; in criminal cases involving family violence, receive training in conducting assessments of dangerousness and recommending appropriate judicial action to ensure the safety of victims including protective orders; receive training in performing in-depth evaluations of violent relationships for the court and preparing written reports recommending suitable dispositional alternatives;
develop and maintain relationships with family violence victim advocates and community agencies as referral and information sources; in criminal cases involving interpersonal disputes, receive training in providing mediation and evaluation services to offenders and victims as a diversion to the adjudication process.
Salary Range: $65,116 - $80,537/year – plus State of Connecticut benefits.
Qualifications and RequirementsExperience and Training

Experience:
A Bachelor's degree.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Incumbents in this class are required to have a valid Connecticut motor vehicle operator's license and a motor vehicle available for daily use.
- Valid Connecticut driver’s license and access to a motor vehicle for daily use.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Incumbents may be exposed to some risk of injury from assaultive/abusive clients; may be exposed to disagreeable conditions when interviewing incarcerated clients.
- Working conditions may include exposure to potentially dangerous situations when interviewing clients.
TERM OF APPOINTMENT:
This class is intended to permit the Judicial Branch to recruit and train employees for the class of Family Relations Counselor I. An employee classified as a Family Relations counselor Trainee shall be advanced to Family Relations Counselor I upon his/her first anniversary with the Judicial Branch and a service rating of satisfactory or better.
- Advancement to Family Relations Counselor I after one year with satisfactory performance.
