Become a Youth Mentor for Foster Youth - New Haven Region
Children in Placement is a 501(c)3 non‑profit that has been helping the children of Connecticut since 1979. We strive to be Connecticut’s recognized leader and, in this role, bring awareness, partnerships, resources and systemic policy changes supporting children and youth in accessing the supports they need to develop and eventually become successful adults.
Our Youth sponsors serve as a steady, consistent support to youth 13–24 years of age that have been in foster care without permanent placement, multiple placements, or are close to aging out of the child welfare system and for whom adoption is no longer wanted or a viable choice. Youth Sponsors are a caring, supportive adult who is in it for the long haul, willing to guide and nurture the youth.
The sponsor works with the young adult to focus on positive youth development, youth‑driven activities and the development of core competencies (decision making, problem solving, how to access services).
The expectations of a Youth Sponsor include:
- Provide stable guidance and supervision.
- Act as a positive role model.
- Connect to other clinical and support services.
- Provide a source of happiness and encouragement.
- Guide the life improvement of the child.
- Support attendance at permanency planning meetings and vital educational meetings to ensure the youth’s needs are being met.
To participate, please contact us or fill out the volunteer application ldreninplacement.org.
