Job Overview

As an Assistant Vice President, Software Engineering, you will own the API and real‑time data streaming platforms used across the enterprise. You will sit at the intersection of technology, data, analytics, and AI enablement, defining how Travelers shares and moves data – a direct competitive advantage in today’s digital economy.

Responsibilities
  • Own the full API platform strategy, including governance, lifecycle management, developer experience, and a multi‑year migration to cloud‑native AWS capabilities.
  • Drive Confluent/Kafka/Flink‑based streaming capabilities that power AI and analytics initiatives at scale.
  • Define and execute a multi‑year platform roadmap aligned with enterprise architecture and AI transformation goals.
  • Establish engineering standards for API design, event‑driven integration, security, and observability.
  • Build high‑performing agile engineering teams through hiring, coaching and the cultivation of ownership, innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Lead teams of Software Engineers by providing technical guidance and mentorship while modeling Travelers’ leadership behaviors.
  • Partner with businesses to establish strategic direction, develop product roadmaps, provide technical oversight for large programs, and implement optimal solutions to meet business needs.
  • Align work with business and engineering priorities to realize meaningful impact.
  • Build collaborative relationships with key leaders and peers across the organization to ensure the best use of overall resources.
  • Apply knowledge of current industry trends and techniques to formulate solutions for software engineering problems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • 10 years of related experience, including experience in the insurance or financial services industry.
  • Experience implementing current technology trends and techniques (e.g., cloud‑based solutions leveraging microservices).
  • Proven ability to interpret internal and external business challenges and recommend best practices to improve SDLC processes.
  • Excellent delivery skills with the ability to examine and assess the effectiveness of software design strategies and methodologies.
  • Demonstrated track record of domain expertise and the ability to consult on business priorities to optimize value through technology solutions.
  • Strong problem‑solving skills with the ability to create robust architecture that mitigates single points of failure.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to describe technology concepts in business‑friendly terms, document effectively, and collaborate across disparate groups.
  • Strong leadership skills, capable of engaging with other leaders and networks to solve problems and improve the engineering organization.
  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science, related STEM field, or equivalent in education and/or work experience; 8 additional years of software engineering experience and 3 years of technical leadership experience.
