We are hiring an experienced Site Safety & Health Officer (SSHO) to support a federal construction project at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in White River Junction, VT. This is a critical on-site role responsible for the full implementation and management of safety and health protocols for the Prime Contractor throughout the duration of the project.
Key Responsibilities- Serve as the designated lead safety official on site, ensuring all activities comply with OSHA standards and applicable federal, state, and local regulations
- Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive site‑specific Accident Prevention Plan (APP)
- Conduct daily safety inspections, hazard analyses, and toolbox talks with all site personnel
- Enforce compliance with safety protocols and address unsafe behaviors or conditions immediately
- Oversee safety documentation including SDS sheets, incident logs, near‑miss reports, and corrective action records
- Serve as the primary liaison between the Prime Contractor, government representatives, subcontractors, and workers on all safety matters
- Monitor all work activities to ensure safe practices are followed at all times
- Lead incident investigations, prepare detailed reports, and implement corrective actions
- Maintain accurate and up‑date safety training records and certifications for all on‑site workers
- Completion of OSHA 30‑Hour Construction Safety Course
- Current professional safety certification, one of the following:
- CHST – Construction Health & Safety Technician
- CSP – Certified Safety Professional
- OHST – Occupational Hygiene & Safety Technician
- ASP – Associate Safety Professional
- GSP – Graduate Safety Practitioner
- STSC – Safety Trained Supervisor Construction
- Or a USACE‑approved equivalent
- One of the following experience or education requirements:
- At least 5 years of full‑time construction industry safety experience
- At least 3 years of experience with a valid CHST or CSP certification
- A degree in Occupational Safety and Health or a related field from an accredited institution
- Demonstrated experience managing site safety on active construction projects
- Familiarity with 29 CFR 1926 and federal construction safety standards
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills
- Ability to work independently and manage all safety responsibilities on site
- Prior experience on federal government construction projects
- Familiarity with VA project protocols and documentation standards
- Experience working on projects with complex or phased scopes of work
- Competitive hourly rate of $45 - $65/hr based on experience and certifications
