The Heavy Equipment Operator ensures the safe operation of heavy equipment in the Material Recovery Facility (MRF) for transferring and loading recycling materials efficiently and safely. The operator may work with skid steers and pullers.
SalaryStarting hourly pay range: $25-$27 per hour.
Key Responsibilities- Perform pre‑ and post‑operation inspections of equipment in accordance with Casella safety standards and state/federal regulations.
- Ensure all safety equipment and devices are operational and properly secured to equipment.
- Inspect recyclables for hazardous waste or unacceptable materials.
- Monitor equipment condition to minimize downtime; clear debris from engine compartments, arms, and exhaust areas as required.
- Perform and document minor service on equipment; refer more complex mechanical issues to the maintenance shop.
- Operate heavy equipment following all safety and training protocols.
- Assist technicians with maintenance and communicate mechanical issues as needed.
- Participate in training and learning opportunities to expand knowledge of the company, products, sales, and services, and perform any other duties to support the company’s vision, mission, and core values.
Apprentice
: 0‑2 years of experience operating heavy equipment; operates one type of yellow‑iron equipment and demonstrates full knowledge of safety protocols.
Operator I: 2‑4 years of experience; operates two types of yellow‑iron equipment with strong safety knowledge.
Operator II
: 4‑6 years of experience; operates three types of yellow‑iron equipment with expert safety knowledge.
Lead Operator
: 6+ years of experience; develops training plans, mentors employees, operates all types of yellow‑iron equipment, and demonstrates strong leadership and communication skills.
• Self‑directed, 18+ years of age, legally eligible to work in the U.S.
• High school diploma or GED required; two years of prior heavy‑equipment operation preferred.
• Ability to work in various weather conditions and perform required physical tasks.
• Proven commitment to work and safety; excellent communication and problem‑solving skills.
Positive, team‑oriented individual with a strong work ethic; committed to safety, customer‑driven, open to training, results‑oriented, and able to see both the big picture and details.
