Job Summary

The Summer Driver's Education Behind-the-Wheel Instructor provides practical driving instruction to students in a controlled and safe environment. This role includes supervising students as they practice driving on the road, offering real-time feedback, and ensuring that they follow traffic laws and demonstrate safe driving behaviors. The instructor tailors lessons based on student abilities, tracks progress, and provides constructive feedback to improve driving skills.

The instructor also collaborates with the teacher to ensure consistency between instruction and behind‑the‑wheel training.

Qualifications
  • Professional Educator License (PEL) or eligibility for appropriate license
  • Endorsement in Secondary Education
  • Valid driver's license
Evaluation

The performance will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s policy on staff evaluation.

Terms of Employment

This is a part‑time, hourly position for four weeks, from June 2nd to June 26th, with an additional four days of planning and professional development to be determined.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide behind‑the‑wheel instruction, supervising students while they practice driving, ensuring adherence to traffic laws and safe driving behaviors.
  • Assess driving skills by evaluating students’ performance during practical sessions and providing real‑time feedback.
  • Ensure safety by maintaining a safe and controlled vehicle environment and following all safety protocols.
  • Develop driving routes to expose students to various traffic situations and road types.
  • Provide constructive feedback after each session, identifying strengths and areas for improvement.
  • Monitor student behavior, ensuring appropriate conduct during lessons.
  • Document progress with detailed records of each lesson, noting skills learned and areas needing improvement.
  • Ensure compliance with traffic laws, teaching and reinforcing local, state and federal regulations.
  • Adapt instruction to individual needs, tailoring lesson plans and guidance as necessary.
  • Collaborate with the classroom driver’s‑education teacher to align lessons and track progress.

Physical Demands

Requires prolonged periods of sitting while driving, alertness, quick response to student actions or traffic situations, ability to adjust vehicle settings, and occasional walking before and after sessions. Requires strong communication skills in a fast‑paced environment.
