General Music Teacher

Job Summary: The General Elementary Music Teacher will provide a rigorous academic environment that actively engages students, incorporates best educational practices, creates an inclusive environment that celebrates diversity and addresses the needs of all learners, and supports the social/emotional development of the students.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Facilitates student learning aligned with the Illinois Learning Standards.
  • Communicates lesson objectives and essential questions to clarify learning goals.
  • Designs and implements lessons that enable all students to meet lesson objectives.
  • Incorporates Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR) strategies to promote rigorous learning.
  • Designs lessons that include multiple learning tasks and opportunities for whole-class participation.
  • Teaches foundational musical concepts, including rhythm, melody, harmony, tempo, dynamics, and musical expression.
  • Engages students in singing, movement, listening, and instrumental experiences to develop musical skills.
  • Encourages creativity through improvisation, composition, and musical expression.
  • Provides opportunities for students to reflect and respond to musical experiences through discussion, writing, or drawing.
  • Integrates music with other content areas when appropriate.
  • Uses instructional technology to enhance teaching and learning.
  • Assesses student progress and provides feedback to students, parents, and administration.
  • Monitors and evaluates individual student skill development.
  • Encourages student ownership of learning through goal setting, reflection, and self-assessment.
  • Creates a supportive, student-centered classroom environment that promotes academic growth and social-emotional well-being.
  • Manages student behavior to ensure a safe and productive learning environment.
  • Implements Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and collaborates with staff to provide appropriate accommodations and modifications.
  • Integrates cultural diversity and appreciation within the curriculum.
  • Collaborates effectively with parents, staff, and community members.
  • Participates in professional learning communities to improve instructional practice and student outcomes. Attends meetings and professional development activities as required.
  • Establishes procedures for the safe and responsible use of musical instruments, equipment, and materials.
  • Maintains and organizes instruments, sheet music, and instructional resources.
  • Prepares students for musical performances, including evening events.
  • Directs concerts, assemblies, and other school performances as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the principal or designee.

  • Must demonstrate a record of effectiveness in their own teaching

  • Must have the ability to work collaboratively with others
  • Must have strong verbal communication skills
  • Must model a desire and willingness to continually learn
Physical Demands

The physical demands of this position include frequent sitting and standing for extended periods of time. Repetitive bending at the waist, as well as kneeling, stooping, and crouching to assist students, is also required. Regularly walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand‑held learning devices, and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.

Required Licenses and Endorsements
  • Professional Educator License (PEL) or eligible for an appropriate license
  • Endorsement in K-8 Music Education or equivalent
