Driver's Education Teacher

The Driver's Education teacher provides practical driving instruction to students in a controlled and safe environment. This role includes supervising students as they practice driving on the road, offering real-time feedback, and ensuring that they follow traffic laws and demonstrate safe driving behaviors. The instructor will tailor lessons based on student abilities, track progress, and provide constructive feedback to improve driving skills.

The instructor will also collaborate with the teacher to ensure consistency between instruction and behind-the-wheel training.

Professional Educator License (PEL) or eligible for appropriate license

Endorsement in Secondary Education

Endorsement in Behind the Wheel Instruction

Valid driver's license

The performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board's policy on staff Evaluation.

Principal

This is a 9-month position. Salary and benefits as established by the Board of Education.

Exempt

Provide Behind-the-Wheel Instruction – Supervise students while they practice driving, ensuring they adhere to traffic laws and demonstrate safe driving behaviors on the road.

Assess Driving Skills – Evaluate students' driving performance during practical driving sessions, providing real-time feedback to help them improve their skills.

Ensure Safety – Maintain a safe and controlled vehicle environment, ensuring the student and instructor follow all safety protocols during instruction.

Develop Driving Routes – Plan and select appropriate driving routes to expose students to various traffic situations, intersections, road types, and driving conditions to broaden their experience.

Provide Constructive Feedback – Offer detailed feedback after each session, identifying strengths and areas for improvement in the student's driving technique.

Monitor Student Behavior – Ensure students exhibit appropriate behavior during driving lessons, staying calm and focused on the task of driving while maintaining a professional and safe learning environment.

Document Progress – Keep detailed records of each student's driving lessons, noting skills learned, areas needing improvement, and overall progress toward becoming a proficient driver.

Ensure Compliance with Traffic Laws – Teach and reinforce compliance with local, state, and federal traffic laws while driving, helping students understand the importance of legal and responsible driving. Adapt to Individual Needs – Tailor driving instruction based on each student's abilities, adjusting lesson plans and guidance as needed to ensure a personalized approach to learning.

Manage the schedule of students for classroom and behind the wheel instruction

Must demonstrate a record of effectiveness in their teaching

Must have excellent planning and organization skills

Must have the ability to work collaboratively with others

Must have strong verbal communication skills

Must model a desire and willingness to learn, constantly seeking ways to improve continually

The physical demands of this position involve prolonged periods of sitting in a vehicle while providing instruction, as well as assisting students with proper vehicle control and positioning. The instructor must have the ability to remain alert and focused while driving, responding quickly to student actions or traffic situations. The role requires the ability to demonstrate driving techniques, which may involve adjusting the vehicle's settings (e.g., mirrors, seat, and steering wheel).

The instructor must be able to assist students in adjusting their driving posture or correcting errors during the lesson. The position may also require some walking, such as before and after driving sessions, checking the vehicle for safety, or walking to meet students for pickup. The instructor should have strong communication skills to provide clear instructions in a dynamic, fast-paced environment, ensuring the safety and well-being of the student and others on the road.
