Job Description

UChicago Medicine Ingalls Memorial Hospital
, as an Armed Public Safety Officer in the Safety Department. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity
. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area.

Under general supervision, the Armed Public Safety Officer provides and maintains a safe environment for employees, patients, visitors, and medical staff through the use of uniformed patrols, emergency response, customer service and enforcement of policies and regulations at all Ingalls facilities.
This is an armed position.

The incumbent may be subjected to extreme temperatures, wet and/or humid conditions, loud noise, and hazards such as mechanical, electrical, chemical, biohazards, sharps, and radiation.

Essential Job Functions
  • Respond to all emergency situations (fire, bomb threat, combative patient, armed subject, lockdown, etc.) on campus that require immediate attention, taking appropriate action to mitigate or eliminate risk.
  • Conduct internal and external patrols of all facilities and grounds for persons needing assistance, safety violations, and evidence of criminal or suspicious activity.
  • Ensure security‑sensitive areas of the facility are properly secured.
  • Assist with enforcement of Ingalls policies and procedures, including access control, identification badges, parking, smoking, and fire safety.
  • Investigate and document safety hazards or criminal incidents that occur.
  • Maintain HIPAA compliance for all protected health information (PHI).
  • Coordinate with law enforcement and fire service personnel responding to the campus.
  • Complete written incident reports for any incidents requiring documentation, ensuring all reports are completed timely.
  • Maintain understanding of Dispatch operations and provide Dispatch relief as needed.
  • Conduct searches of persons and property for contraband when necessary.
  • Provide transportation for patients, visitors, and staff to and from their vehicles when requested.
  • Collect, inventory, and secure patient belongings as required.
  • Maintain duty posts in the Emergency Department areas and assist clinical staff when requested.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Knowledge of Ten‑Codes.
  • Excellent communication skills to provide service in a friendly, calm, professional manner to all internal and external customers in stressful, tense, or ambiguous situations.
  • Good command of the English language for filing and composing paperwork.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Driver's License.
  • Current CPR Card (American Heart Association).
  • Valid Illinois Firearm Owner Identification (FOID) Card.
  • State of Illinois 40‑Hour Armed Security Officer Certification (Semi‑Automatic firearm) with a firearm requalification date within six months of hire.
  • Completion of the following training/certifications provided by Ingalls:
    • State of Illinois Firearm Control Card (issued after hire).
    • Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) Verbal Intervention Training/Certification (within the first 60 days of employment).
    • IAHSS Basic Certified Healthcare Security Officer (within six months of appointment).
    • FEMA IC‑S 100 and IC‑S 200 level courses (within six months of appointment).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate Degree in Criminal Justice or equivalent field.
  • 1‑2 years of experience in a public safety position (public safety/security officer, police officer, firefighter/EMT) or comparable military service.

  • Shift: 12 hr, Rotating – 6:00 pm to 6:30 am, 6:00 am to 6:30 pm
    • The position will require uniformed duty and may involve rotating shifts to address 24/7 departmental staffing needs.
