Position OverviewMotor Pool Mechanics and Mechanic Apprentices play a critical role in maintaining JPSO’s fleet to ensure safe, reliable, and mission‑ready operations. Positions involve inspecting, diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing Sheriff’s Office vehicles and equipment in accordance with safety standards, departmental policies, and manufacturer specifications.
Mechanics perform advanced repairs independently, while Apprentices work under supervision and participate in hands‑on training to develop technical skills.
Essential FunctionsMotor Pool Mechanic
Inspect, diagnose, maintain, and repair Sheriff’s Office vehicles and equipment
Perform preventive maintenance and mechanical, electrical, and drivetrain repairs
Utilize diagnostic tools and manufacturer software
Conduct vehicle inspections and road tests; document all repairs and maintenance
Identify unsafe or out‑of‑service vehicles and recommend corrective actions
Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in compliance with safety standards
Support fleet operations during emergencies or special assignments as needed
Motor Pool Mechanic ApprenticeAssist mechanics with routine maintenance, inspections, and basic repairs
Perform preventive maintenance including oil changes, tire rotations, brake service, and fluid checks
Learn mechanical and electrical diagnostics using tools and basic diagnostic equipment
Conduct vehicle inspections and report safety concerns
Maintain a clean, safe, and organized motor pool and work area
Follow all safety standards and departmental policies while participating in on‑the‑job training
Minimum QualificationsMotor Pool Mechanic
Minimum of three (3) consecutive years of automotive or diesel mechanical repair experience
Thorough knowledge of gasoline and diesel vehicle systems
Ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain vehicles using manuals, schematics, and diagnostic equipment
Proficiency with diagnostic tools and manufacturer software (including Ford diagnostic systems)
Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office and maintenance/recordkeeping software)
Valid Louisiana driver’s license (CDL preferred)
Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting up to 50 pounds
Motor Pool Mechanic ApprenticeBasic knowledge or technical training in automotive or diesel mechanics preferred
Up to one (1) year of automotive mechanical experience or related training
Ability to follow instructions and assist with vehicle maintenance and repairs
Willingness to learn diagnostic procedures, tools, and manufacturer software
Basic computer skills for work orders and recordkeeping
Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting up to 50 pounds
