Purpose of AnnouncementExamination is announced to supplement the existing employment list to fill five (5) current West Jefferson vacancies in the Department of Juvenile Services and future West Jefferson vacancies as they occur. All positions in this class are located in West Jefferson. Applications of those unwilling to work in West Jefferson will not be referred.
Kind of WorkThis position is a responsible entry level position involving duties which include providing for the safety and security of residents and the facility, complete physical care, safety, humane treatment and well-being of juvenile offenders being held in residential custody of the Juvenile Court. Employee insures a resident's daily activities schedule are carried out accurately as provided by supervisory staff. Observes the behavior of residents, initiates non-clinical counseling, and rap sessions with residents.
Will supervise residents from beginning to end of shift. It must be understood this position is frequently in charge of one or more offenders and must be able to preserve order and deal with severe disciplinary problems if required. This necessitates physical agility and strength, as well as a controlled but firm manner in dealing with juveniles. Tours of duty are on a shift basis (day and/or night, may include weekends and holidays, and are subject to rotation.
Position requires driving of a Parish vehicle, thus possession of a valid driver's license and acceptable driving record will be given preference. This position is also an essential, emergency duty status worker and may not be relieved of duty when the Parish President or his designee recommends a voluntary or mandatory evacuation of Jefferson Parish.
Meets one of the following: I. Possession of a high school diploma or equivalency certificate and a minimum of three (3) years of full-time, paid experience working with children of school age (7 to 17 years-of-age) or working in a detention or residential treatment facility as a correctional officer, probation officer, resident supervisor, or treatment provider. OR II. Possession of an accredited Associate's degree.
SUBSTITUTION:
Candidates not possessing the required experience in Option I or Associate's degree in Option II may qualify via successful completion of accredited college coursework; 30 semester hours of credit may substitute for each year of experience lacking in Option I. PROOF OF EDUCATION IS REQUIRED.

Any conviction listed in the Louisiana Child Protection Act (Louisiana R.S. 15:587.1) is considered disqualifying, unless written proof of pardon is submitted in time for consideration with the application.
(ENTRANCE AND PROMOTIONAL) Written Test --------------------------------------------- 100% The written test is designed to evaluate the candidate's knowledge of first aid, juvenile behavior, juvenile delinquency and the problems encountered in the detention and care of juvenile inmates. A Flexible Savings Account for Medical Expenses and Dependent Care is also available. Retirement Most regular employees belong to the Parochial Employees' Retirement System instead of the Social Security System. For employees hired after January 01, 2007, a pension calculated at 3% of salary per year of service is provided upon retirement at age 67 with 7 years of service, age 62 with 10 years of service, or age 55 with 30 years of service.
Tenure Payment Employees are paid $25 per year of service in December of each year. Employees must have worked two years before the first check is paid.
