Automotive Technician, Heavy Equipment Mechanic, Automotive Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic
Perform routine and advanced maintenance and repair on buses, vans, and other vehicles in accordance with First Student standards. Responsibilities include tire maintenance, service calls, visual inspections, and related tasks. This role works with minimal supervision, handles more complex repairs, and may escalate highly technical issues to senior technicians. A strong commitment to safety is essential. May provide informal guidance to Technician I employees.
Pay: $27.00/hr based on the current collective bargaining agreement.
Major Responsibilities- Perform routine and advanced maintenance to ensure vehicles are safe and operational, including replacement of bulbs, fuses, lenses, wiper blades, belts, hoses, batteries, and performing fluid checks, changes, and lubrication
- Complete mechanical repairs under moderate supervision, including brakes, engine tune-ups, suspensions, drive trains, transmission clutches, and related systems
- Diagnose and repair vehicle and equipment issues accurately across all phases of maintenance
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, including work orders, parts usage, and supply tracking; order parts from designated suppliers
- Assist Technician III with preventative maintenance (PMs), safety inspections, and annual inspections at required intervals
- Remove and replace major components (engine, transmission, differential) under Technician III supervision
- Inspect completed work, evaluate quality, and obtain approval when required
- Identify and report potentially dangerous equipment and document corrective actions taken
- Assist with road calls and emergency service as needed
- Adhere to First Group policies, procedures, and safety standards
- Safely move vehicles between work areas
- Repair and maintain shop equipment
- Clean vehicles as required
- Perform additional duties as assigned
- Intermediate mechanical aptitude with 3+ years of automotive or diesel repair experience (or equivalent education/experience)
- Knowledge of and adherence to state DOT safety and inspection standards
- Valid driver's license; ability to obtain/maintain required credentials
- Intermediate problem-solving and computer skills
- Proficient with hand tools and maintaining personal tool inventory in a safe, organized manner
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Maintain a clean, organized shop environment
- Reliable attendance and punctuality
- Commitment to ensuring vehicles are safe and properly maintained
- Work in a maintenance shop environment with exposure to dust, dirt, and grease
- Ability to work in all weather conditions
- Lift a minimum of 50 pounds
- Work in physically demanding positions, including crouching or lying on a mechanic's creeper beneath vehicles
