School Social Worker

Elementary

Summary:

The School Social Worker provides tiered social, emotional, and behavioral support to both special education and general education elementary students in Haslett Public Schools. This is a split assignment. A portion of the role supports the special education caseload through evaluations, IEP development, IEP-mandated services, and behavior intervention plans. A remaining portion supports general education students through Tier 2 and Tier 3 interventions within the district's MTSS framework, including consultation with teachers, small-group skill-building, and short-term individual intervention.

The School Social Worker collaborates with school staff, provides crisis support, and connects families to school and community resources to promote student success.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Social Work.
  • Michigan Department of Education School Social Worker Approval (Full or Temporary) in good standing.
  • One year experience in school social work practice in a school setting which can include master's level social work internship.
  • Working knowledge of IDEA, Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education (MARSE), FERPA, and the Michigan Child Protection Law.
  • Able to effectively communicate with students, staff, parents, and outside support resources.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Special Education Caseload

  • Perform comprehensive SSW evaluations and re-evaluations for students that may qualify for special education or are already on special education caseload.
  • Participate in MET, IEPT, and IEP meetings, and support IEP development, implementation, and progress monitoring.
  • Deliver IEP-mandated social work services consistent with each student's plan and minutes.
  • Conduct Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) and develop, implement, and monitor Positive Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs).

General Education/MTSS

  • Contribute to Tier 1 universal supports, including SEL programming, attendance interventions, and school climate work.
  • Deliver Tier 2 small-group interventions focused on social-emotional learning, self-regulation, and coping skills.
  • Provide Tier 3 individual intervention for students with elevated needs, including risk and threat assessment and safety planning.
  • Consult with teachers and administrators on classroom-level behavior strategies, trauma-informed practices, and proactive support.
  • Participate on the district's MTSS Teams.

Crisis, Collaboration, and Family Engagement

  • Provide individual and group social-emotional support to students.
  • Meet and collaborate with families, staff, and administration to support student needs.
  • Provide crisis intervention, suicide risk and threat assessment support, conflict resolution, and re-entry planning following hospitalization or extended absence.
  • Connect students and families to community mental health, Community Mental Health Authority of Clinton, Eaton, and Ingham Counties (CEI CMH) services, Medicaid, and basic-needs resources.
  • Fulfill mandated reporter responsibilities under the Michigan Child Protection Law.
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and outside support resources.

Documentation, Compliance, and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate documentation and comply with school, district, state, and legal requirements, including FERPA and confidentiality protections for behavioral health records.
  • Collect and report outcome data required for accountability and any other applicable funding sources.
  • Document services consistent with MARSE timelines and, where applicable, Medicaid School Services Program requirements.

Salary / Benefits:
Full-time position; in accordance with the HEA Master Contract

Reporting / Assignment:
This position will serve either Murphy (gr. 2-5) or Ralya (gr. 2-5), to be determined based on district staffing and student needs; reports to building principal, with program supervision and support from the Director of Student Services.
